The Johns Hopkins University Student Health & Well-Being portfolio supports health education, primary care and mental health services for JHU students and learners across all nine schools within the University. In addition to health education, our integrated service delivery model provides in-person primary and mental health care options at our clinics as well as remote support though phone and online resources.

We are seeking aAssociate Director (AD) for Student Well-Being who will report to the Director of Student Well-Being and will provide leadership, planning, development, implementation and evaluation of theory-based and evidence-informed well-being and health promotion strategies to address gender violence and related college health issues. These efforts are directed toward creating, mobilizing and sustaining practices and policies that support a holistic and comprehensive view of health and fosters university-wide well-being at individual and environmental levels. This position will coordinate with campus partners and local resources to deliver prevention and education programming specifically addressing power-based personal violence, and including but not limited to, sexual assault, bystander intervention, and hazing. The AD will supervise prevention, education and response staff members and manage a caseload with a confidential status.

In partnership with departments in the Health and Well-Being portfolio, Student Affairs practitioners, Campus Safety and Security, and the Office of Institutional Equity, among others, JHU will develop and implement a continuum of programs and services for/with students and trainees, in trauma-informed and evidence-based approaches, from prevention to response.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate 2-3 full-time gender violence prevention and response coordinators
  • In partnership with the Sexual Violence Advisory Committee (SVAC) and other University entities, lead ongoing enhancements and practices related to the University’s comprehensive sexual violence prevention and education initiatives which are tied to compliance with the Title IX Amendment, the Clery Act, and related laws and regulations.
  • Work collaboratively to maintain and institutionalize inclusive and accessible population-based education initiatives for students and trainees.
  • Serve in the absence of the Director.

Systems Management and Reporting

  • Maintain and monitor case records pertaining to disclosures of sexual assault and sexual misconduct for self and the team of coordinators in a variety of electronic student records
  • Interpret university policy regarding students and the institutional processes for Title IX and sexual misconduct and advise students and consult with administrators as appropriate
  • Prepare ad hoc reports, data requests and annual report for internal stakeholders.
  • Collect data to support department activities and guide organizational goals. Engage in research projects designed to improve University response to sexual violence and other behavioral health concerns, inform effective prevention methods, and improve existing services. Compile annual reports reflecting the results of research projects.

Outreach Training and Education

  • Serve as a primary leader in educating and training the JHU community about healthy relationships, including direct oversight of intimate partner violence prevention and response and pro-social skill development around healthy relationships.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to designated divisions within Johns Hopkins University to facilitate bystander education training and related sex and gender violence prevention and back-up to other divisions when needed.
  • Develop, lead, coordinate, facilitate and assess educational workshops and presentations for students, trainees, faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • Work with campus partners to coordinate, develop and facilitate University-wide education related to trauma informed care and pedagogy and Title IX.
  • Focus on evidence-based and innovative strategies as well as university-wide assessment
  • Facilitate and support education related to various other wellness initiatives such as problematic drinking and other drug use, gender role socialization, healthy masculinities, life skills, mental health and healthy coping.

Student-Facing Responsibilities

  • Serve as a confidential resource to students/trainees who are disclosing experiences of sex or gender-based violence (sexual assault, rape, intimate partner violence, domestic violence, stalking) for designated divisions and back-up to other divisions when needed.
  • Document notes from student meetings and institutional processes in a secure and confidential capacity
  • Contact and collaborate with other University departments to expedite resolution of problems.
  • Provide referrals to support services within the University as well as community agencies.
  • Follow up and track prior cases to ensure student compliance with recommendations and adequate staff support for the student.
  • Formulate intervention plans in order to enhance the academic success of students.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelors degree required. Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Public Health or a related field preferred.
  • Licensed or eligible to obtain a license in the State of Maryland preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in health promotion/violence prevention or related student affairs field.
  • Experience working with diverse populations of students and trainees in a complex, institutional setting.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Experience with supervision of peer educators, student employees, or professional staff.
  • Experience leveraging passion for trauma-informed advocacy work into a holistic well-being program in a higher education context.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge and experience with gender/sexual violence issues in institutions of higher education as well as specialized expertise and knowledge of the effects of sexual assault on victims, survivor recovery, medical and legal procedures.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Capacity to respond well in crisis situations and to persons in distress.
  • Knowledge of how to launch strategic communication campaigns about health-related topics, in both print and web.
  • Discretion and sound judgment with highly confidential information.
  • Ability to foster positive and productive relationships with all campus constituencies including students, trainees, staff, administrators, and faculty.
  • Experience as a trainer and expertise in training models regarding the dynamics, approach, and response to violence prevention and response on college campuses.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills, including public speaking and presenting.
  • Ability to lead and also work as part of a team.
  • Must be available to work some nights/weekends.
  • As a university-wide position, staff must be available to travel to JHU campuses in the Baltimore and DC regions.
