The nationally recognized Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, & Metabolism at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is planning to develop a comprehensive multidisciplinary adrenal program with a roadmap to establish an Adrenal Center. We are seeking aSenior Clinical Nurse who will provide endocrine dynamic testing support to Dr. Amir Hamrahian in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism who has significant expertise in performing a whole range of endocrine dynamic testing. He will closely supervise and train the new hire to perform such tests. Good IV line placement skill is preferred, but at a minimum there is a requirement to learn and be comfortable with IV line placement and higher acute care in general.

The successful candidate will have experience in clinical program building and be able to navigate a complex organization to build relationships and find resources to support new clinical programs. This position also requires the ability to communicate with patients and their referring physicians to coordinate multi-specialty care. In addition, the clinical nurse will review patient medical records in advance to make sure appropriate laboratory and imaging studies have been performed prior to their visit. Furthermore, the Clinical Nurse will provide clinical support for other physicians, coordinate clinical programs in the Division, and serve as a liaison for the Division with departmental and institutional leadership. This position requires a degree of flexibility and adaptability with time to meet strict time requirements associated with certain dynamic tests. Some familiarity with contacting insurance companies and working through the financial clearance process is preferred.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Adrenal Discipline Specific Responsibilities:

  • Performs endocrine dynamic testing under the supervision of Dr. Amir Hamrahian. This typically involves placement of peripheral intravenous catheter, administration of medications, monitoring of vital signs, and phlebotomy at regular intervals based on the protocol.
  • Serves as clinical support to Dr. Amir Hamrahian and other endocrine faculty as needed
  • Provides support to patients in the adrenal clinic and by phone/email for guidance on appropriate preparation to undergo endocrine dynamic testing
  • Provides support to patients in the clinic and by phone/email for problems associated with adrenal disorders, including but not limited to fluctuations in blood pressure, electrolyte disorders and function of adrenal gland.
  • Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for making decisions regarding patient care
  • Serves as a patient advocate
  • Demonstrates responsibility and accountability with patients, family members, other providers and support personnel regarding patient care and or clinic operations
  • Exercises independent, professional judgement and decision-making on a consistent basis
  • Adapts to changes in technology and software to ensure efficient office practice
  • Assists with Epic InBasket management (results, advice requests, prescription refills)
  • Triages clinical or problem patient calls at the request of physicians or medical office coordinator
  • Assist physicians in contacting patients with test results, as directed
  • Pends orders for prescriptions to be signed by physicians
  • Contacts patients to get clarification on medication dosing or clinical problem and discuss recommendations with physicians
  • Assists with prior authorization requests
  • Attends outpatient clinics to assist with dynamic endocrine testing, prescription refills, laboratory testing, patient education, and coordination of care.
  • Research Responsibilites:

    • There may be opportunities to recruit patients for clinical research studies in the adrenal field and provide educational support to research subjects.

    Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

    Individual must be a registered nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing. Bachelor's degree in nursing or related discipline required. Requires minimum of two years of related nursing experience. Additional experience may substitute for bachelor's degree. Related master's degree may be considered in lieu of experience. Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and

    certification during duration of employment. Acceptable completion of the JHH credentialing process.

    ​​​​​​​JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • ACLS Certified.
    • Experience with IV-line placement.
    • Experience in establishing intravenous (IV) access for dynamic testing.
    • Experience with obtaining blood samples via IV catheter.
    • Three (3) years clinical experience in an ambulatory (outpatient) setting preferred.
    • Strong computer skills in an Electronic Medical record preferred.

    • Flexibility to adjust schedule to meet patient and staff needs.
    • Ability to manage time and stress effectively and adapt to unpredictable situations within the patient care setting.

    Physical Requirements:

    Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.
