Job Details

The Department of Surgery seeks aSystems Engineer who will report to the Information Technology Senior Manager in the Department of Surgery.

The scope of this position encompasses the responsibilities listed below that fall under Department of Surgery’s informatics team. The impact of this position is to ensure compliance, operational efficiency and value in data aggregation and analytic reporting to support the clinical, research and academic missions of the department that are critical for regulatory and operational needs.

  • Responsible for full life cycle of complex reporting and visualization projects, typically manages multiple projects of varying complexities and is responsible for developing and maintaining Tableau Visualization Dashboards to report relevant clinical and operational performance of the department. This requires analyzing, manipulating and interpreting data from multiple sources.
  • Develops and manages perioperative service line dashboard metrics.
  • Maintains SQL queries and stored procedures and automates SQL extracts for data access and delivery.
  • Applies analysis techniques and procedures to gather and translate business requirements into functional/technical specifications and reports. Using functional specifications and designs, produce deliverables under the scope of the project terms.
  • Develop Quality Assessment Performance Improvement (QAPI) and Key Performance Indicators (KPI) performance tools for the Department of Surgery.
  • Develop and maintain Tableau dashboards for performance monitoring integrating Clinical EMR data, Vizient Data and Clinical Registry Data for departmental, hospital and enterprise leadership.
  • Assists the Senior Information Technology manager in support and deployment of IT related programs and needs in the Department of Surgery.
  • Developing and completing data project management plans with adherence to timelines for successful data extraction, validation and reporting services.
  • Designing, validating and testing EPIC extracts and Tableau Dashboards. Writing SQL code and stored procedures for clinical data extracts. Writing SSIS packages to automate data extracts. Using data analysis, visualization and reporting; identify, collate and present data from various clinical and financial systems for use in decision support reports, dashboards, longitudinal trending, and quality/productivity measurement. Creating reports and data extracts to support departmental clinical registries. (NSQIP, Vascular VQI, STS Cardiac/Thoracic, CESQIP, Trauma, Burn, Endocrine, etc. The creation, maintenance of documentation of data workflows for data extraction, reporting, analytics and data management. Ensuring clinical data mining/reporting/data extraction requests from EPIC adhere to best practices of data management, Johns Hopkins Policies, Institutional Review Board (IRB) regulations, Clinical Analytics Policies and Procedures and the Johns Hopkins Data Trust.
  • Data Management includes meeting with faculty and staff to identify data requirements, understanding documentation workflow and reporting process in EPIC in order to generate accurate outcome metrics, reports, research cohorts, data sets, dashboards and reports.
  • Maintain databases and application system code.
  • Develop Quality Assessment Performance Improvement (QAPI) and Key Performance Indicators (KPI) performance tools.
  • Develop and manage business intelligent analytics for complex visualizations in dashboards and reports under the guidelines and policies of the Johns Hopkins Enterprise Analytic Teams.
  • Provide departmental support of REDcap datasets, evaluate and lead development of EPIC integration with REDCap databases.
  • Develop and maintain Tableau dashboards for performance monitoring integrating Clinical EMR data, Vizient Data and Clinical Registry Data for departmental, hospital and enterprise leadership.
  • Manage the intake process and release of data for departmental data requests, identify resources and prioritize work to meet deadlines and ensure compliance with institutional policy and regulations. Implement and oversight of data auditing practices and data validation before data is released. Maintain tracking system/log of all data requests.
  • Collaborate with Department of Surgery’s Informatics Team, Clinical Registry Team and the JH Enterprise EPIC team to develop technology, workflow and processes to optimize data abstraction and data validation for electronic submission. Work with Enterprise Tableau dashboard teams for consolidation and enhancement of e-metric reporting.
  • Assist in writing and preparation of abstracts/manuscripts, grants, slide decks for professional presentations and publications. Present technology supported research and quality improvement projects at institutional, regional and national meetings.
  • Provide support to the administrative team and faculty for: the Residency Program, Administrative Projects, Managed Care Projects, US News Surveys, & Quality/Performance Improvement initiatives. Manage and maintain SharePoint Sites and collaborative tools for communication and education.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Analysis and Requirements Gathering:

    Define business/clinical data management/reporting problems/ requests by meeting with clients to observe and understand current processes and issues related to those processes that impact the deliverable. Provide written documentation of findings to share with client and other IT colleagues. Gather complex system requirements by meeting with clients and researching existing reports, extracts, dashboards / technology solutions to understand the business requirements and possible solutions.

Design and Development:

    Development detailed tasks and project plans by analyzing scope and milestones in order to ensure product is delivered in a timely fashion according to software/reporting Lifecycle standards. Review tasks and milestones for adherence to quality of deliverables.
  • Write functional/technical specifications from the system requirements, putting them into functional and technical descriptions for use by programmers and business analysts to develop technical solutions.
  • Develop/change data input, files/database structures, data transformation, algorithms, and data output by using appropriate computer language/tools to provide technical solutions for highly complex application development tasks.
  • Document code and associated processes by adhering to development methodologies, adding code comments and appropriate documentation to various knowledge-based system(s) to simplify code maintenance and to improve support.

Testing and Documentation:

    Create and document analytic solutions using the appropriate testing tools to validate and verify application/dashboard and reporting functionality. Test all changes by using the appropriate scenarios to ensure all delivered solutions work as expected and errors are handled in a meaningful way. Author and maintain documentation by writing audience-appropriate materials to serve as technical and/or end-user references.

Implementation and Maintenance:

  • Implement changes by adhering to the change management policies and procedures for any given project to communicate to all parties the nature, significance, and risk factors of the solution.
  • Monitor changes and resolve problems by responding as they occur, by reviewing all processing and output of the newly implemented solution, and by proactively ensuring the solution works successfully in order to satisfy the customer requirements and to provide a smooth transition to the new solution.
  • Provide support by investigating and resolving issues to ensure prompt, effective service.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Completed training in EPIC Caboodle and Clarity.
  • Completed training in Tableau coursework preferred
  • Yearly Continuing Education Units are required.
  • 5 years related experience with SQL programming, relational database management experience and Microsoft SQL Management Studio.
  • Experience should also include experience with surgical and/or transplant clinical data management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 1-year Business Services Analysts experience in health care strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience in developing Tableau Dashboards to support clinical decisions in healthcare. Experience with EPIC’s Slicer Dicer, Reporting Workbench and Data Warehouse.
  • Completion of Johns Hopkins Leadership in Analytics and Data Science Program.
  • Vizient Analyst Certification
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.
