Summary/Objective

The Part time Shuttle Operator operates a 30,35,40 foot or larger commercial transit bus or any other University owned or leased vehicle in a safe and efficient manner, in accordance with the U.S. Dept. of Transportation (USDOT) Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) Parts 382, 383, 387, 390-397, 399, and 40 with specific instructions without detailed or continuous supervision incurring additional responsibilities as needed.

Essential Functions
  1. Operates a 30 foot or larger transit bus or any other University owned or leased vehicle in a safe manner pursuant to the USDOT-FHWA’s FMCSR Parts 390-397, and 399, while utilizing prescribed standards for operating handicapped lifts, air brakes, and emergency equipment in order to transport members of the University in a safe manner.
  2. Communicates and interacts with a diverse passenger base by practicing customer relations. Serves as an informational resource by providing route and schedule information, service updates and changes, and any other information relative to shuttle operations and the University. Communicates effectively with fellow colleagues (Administrator, Operators, University Police, etc.) via cell phone or direct connect features in the event of emergencies, disturbances, service updates, etc. following University protocol.
  3. Conducts daily regular maintenance and service checks of the transit buses pursuant to USDOT-FHWA’s FMCSR Parts 392, 393, and 396, while communicating vehicle problems to the Supervisor of Shuttle Operations and other members of the University, when required.
  4. Participates in various activities and training to enhance organizational effectiveness within the University with a primary focus on adherence to University personnel policies and procedures. Displays awareness and knowledge of transit-related issues and keeps abreast of these issues via training and professional development opportunities. This position must satisfactorily complete required training workshops (ex. Disability Awareness, Substance Abuse Awareness and the Anti-Drug Policy, Wheelchair Lift and Securement Techniques, Shuttle Operator Training).
  5. Reports all accidents, incidents, unusual occurrences, and any other matters that could affect the University to the Supervisor of Shuttle Operations and Public Safety. Completion and submission of administrative reports (i.e. route manifests, vehicle inspection, attendance and leave, accident, incident, etc.)


Supervisory Responsibility
  • This position reports directly to the Supervisor of Shuttle Operations.
  • This position exercises duties with minimal supervision and is required to maintain awareness of USDOT and FHWA regulation.
Work Environment
  • This position possesses an awareness of the Americans with Disabilities Act and its implications in the transit industry.
  • The Part Time Shuttle Operator has a working knowledge of the operation and functions of specialized equipment (i.e. handicapped lifts, air brake systems, emergency equipment, etc.)
  • Transports an average of one million riders per year. Operates a transit bus in excess of 15,500 miles per year.
Required Education and Experience
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • A minimum of two years continuous active experience in the operation of a motor vehicle at the time of appointment.
  • Minimum of one year successfully demonstrated experience operating a commercial motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of at least 10,000 pounds and satisfactory work attendance records are desirable.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • Applicant must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
  • Knowledge of, or the ability to acquire knowledge of the applicable motor vehicle code of the jurisdiction(s) in which the incumbent will be operating the vehicle.
  • Knowledge of, or the ability to acquire the knowledge of an assigned vehicle in order to evaluate its general operating condition.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to work variable hours and shifts.
  • Ability to perform a variety of manual tasks under continuous exposure to various weather conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to operate the vehicle in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to take direction and work under minimum supervision.
  • Possession of a currently valid commercial driver’s license Class B with passenger and air brake endorsements issued by the jurisdiction in which the individual resides.
  • No applicant will be considered for employment who has accrued more than 2 points; moving violations, suspensions or revocations of a driver’s permit as a result of a moving traffic violation within the 36 months preceding appointment.
  • The incumbent must successfully pass Pre-Employment and annual testing consisting of an observed Road Test, Written Examination, and Driver Record Review as prescribed by the Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations Parts 383, 390-397.
  • Ability to satisfactorily complete Pre-Employment and Biennial Medical examinations and pass Pre-Employment and all Controlled Substance testing as prescribed by the USDOT-FHWA’s FMCSR Parts 382, 383, 390-397, 399, and 40.
