This is a 9-month tenure-accruing position that will be 60% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station) and 40% teaching (College of Agricultural and Life Sciences), available in the Food and Resource Economics Department, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida. This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. Duties will include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in agricultural and/or applied economics to support our undergraduate and graduate programs. Tenure will accrue in the Food and Resource Economics Department.

The successful candidate will engage in scholarly activities related to instruction, including teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses, advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, participating in curriculum revision and enhancement, seeking funding for the teaching program, supervising undergraduate and graduate research and creative work, publishing teaching-related scholarship, producing learning tools, and engaging in professional development activities related to teaching and advising. Faculty are encouraged to support and participate in the CALS Honors Program, distance education, and international education. The faculty member will participate actively in undergraduate education and graduate education by chairing graduate committees, serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis and dissertation research, supervising undergraduate research, and publishing the results with their graduate students. The faculty member will seek contract and grant funding actively to support their program. The faculty member will engage in Extension activities in their program area.

Because of the IFAS land-grant mission, all faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in all three mission areas—Research, Teaching and Extension—regardless of the assignment split specified in the position description.

Institutional Background:

The Food and Resource Economics Department (FRED) has approximately 30 faculty members, 10 support staff positions in Gainesville, and 6 faculty members spread across 5 Research and Education Centers throughout the state. FRED faculty teach a wide variety of courses, from agribusiness marketing, to natural resource/environmental economics, to welfare economics and trade theory. FRED averages approximately 300 undergraduate majors/year, and 60-80 M.S., Ph.D. and Master of Agribusiness students. Research and Extension efforts reflect both the needs of the State and the mission of the Agricultural Economics profession.

Required:

A doctorate degree (or, foreign equivalent) in agricultural and/or applied economics, economics, or a related field is required. The candidate must have a research program related to markets for food and/or natural resources. Specific areas of research include, but are not limited to, international economics, commodity markets, production, consumption, supply chain analysis, and price analysis.

Applicants should possess demonstrable verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, as well as excellent empirical research skills. Experience in pursuing extramural funding opportunities and/or working in teams is preferred. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system. Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability. Experience and/or interest in working with artificial intelligence, machine learning, or big data is desirable.
