Job Summary
The Golf Course Superintendent is entrusted with the maintenance, operation, and management of the golf course and its grounds. The Golf Course Superintendent shall manage the maintenance of the golf course, the maintenance and repair of maintenance equipment, render professional advice, opinions, assistance, and services as a member of the University Park leadership team.

Responsibilities
  • Perform related duties as assigned to support the mission of the University
  • Oversee expenditures and cost control measures to maintain operating and capital expenses in line with approved budgets
  • Maintain accurate and complete records on payroll, inventory, weather, maintenance procedures, and pesticide applications
  • Prepare personnel and cost estimates for the annual maintenance department budget
  • Review and enforce policies and procedures
  • Maintain and utilize risk management best practices
  • Assist with department and/or facility special events
  • Maintain industry standards
  • Serve on University and departmental work teams and committees
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Coordinate and administer all aspects of the maintenance, operation, and management of the golf course and its grounds
  • Recruit, hire, train, develop, supervise 20-30 student staff including graduate assistant(s) and greenskeepers
  • Supervise three full time staff positions including an Assistant Superintendent, Mechanic, and Grounds Worker.
  • Supervise the maintenance of the golf course, including the mowing, watering, and maintenance of tees, greens, fairways, and related areas.
  • Prepare annual budget for the maintenance and capital improvement of University Park
  • Plan all maintenance and project work to achieve maintenance standards and long-range goals
  • Acquire equipment and purchase necessary supplies to maintain the golf course and its grounds
  • Oversee property inventory and equipment maintenance programs

Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in agronomy, turf management, or related field or Bachelor's Degree plus a certificate from a turf management program

Other Required Qualifications
  • A thorough understanding of the rules and strategies of the game of golf
  • Current state certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator

Required Experience
  • Three (3) or more years of experience maintaining a golf course and associated facilities
  • Supervisory experience

Preferred Qualifications
Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of current federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting the management of golf course operations (including, but not limited to employment, safety, and environmental standards, laws and regulations)
  • Certified Golf Course Superintendent
  • Class A Golf Course Superintendent

Preferred Educational Qualifications
  • Masters degree in agronomy, turf management or related field

Preferred Experience
  • Experience within a University golf setting
  • Experience managing warm season turf grasses

Proposed Salary
Commensurate with experience

  • Knowledge of the maintenance of the different types of turf used on golf courses, and the planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs and trees.
  • Knowledge of the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners, herbicides and pest control methods and materials.
  • Knowledge of drainage control methods, watering and irrigation systems, including wells, pumps and automatic controls.
  • Participating knowledge of the game of golf
