You will play a central and critical role in the placement of incoming undergraduate and graduate students into ELL (speaking and writing) courses. You will coordinate all English language testing/assessments for an ever-growing international student population. Also, you will teach two sections of the ELL writing courses each academic year, and be as a critical resource to campus stakeholders on all matters related to English language acquisition and training.

Looking for enthusiastic promoters of learning who understand the learning and growth that takes place when students cross national borders, learn new languages, and come to understand different cultures. Be responsible for the development and implementation of a wide range of programs and support systems for all students transitioning to college-level study in the English language.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide programmatic and administrative leadership and coordinate the development and implementation of a wide range of programs and support systems for all students transitioning to college ­level study in the English language.
  • Teach and/or schedule all non­credit ELL workshops/courses throughout the academic year.
  • Strategically plan and prepare overview of program management, curriculum development, assessment, student support programs, and strategic planning for ELL.
  • Build partnerships across the College to enhance the ELL experience for students (international and domestic).
  • Teach and/or schedule all ELL workshops for faculty and non­credit courses for students throughout the academic year: CC610, CC611, CC612, and CC613.
  • Develop innovative co­curricular programs that foster the holistic development of international students on the Emerson campus (both inside and outside the classroom).


Other Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the overall administration of the ELL program: review and make decisions regarding final student placements and advancement, review and develop ELL policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate/ liaison with various campus stakeholders, administrative units to ensure the smooth facilitation and operation of Emerson's comprehensive English language support services and resources (i.e. partnerships with Writing and Resource Center, First Year Writing Program, Graduate Program Directors, etc.).
  • Assess and enhance ELL programs consistently: curricular design and academic­ focused programming, analyze course, instructor(s), and program evaluations
  • Develop and evaluate instructional approaches and procedures, and communicate them to teaching staff. In collaboration with the team, actively identify opportunities to expand and enhance the ELL program; facilitate national TESOL/ESL accreditation processes and self­ studies; and identify and apply for grant opportunities to support program expansion and enhance current offerings.
  • Collaborate with others in the Office of Internationalization & Global Engagement (IGE) to develop marketing and communication plans to promote the ELL program campus­ wide, and ensure that IGE/ELL web pages and informational materials are accurate and accessible.
  • Actively participate in the Office's strategic planning, assessment and reporting of IGE initiatives.


Your Skills and Experience:
  • Master's degree in TESOL/ESL, applied linguistics, or closely ­related field is required.
  • Minimum of five years of directly related academic teaching, administrative and supervisory experience in English as a Second Language program administration; and an extensive experience with ESL/ELL assessment and curriculum development, as well as instruction at a university ­based Intensive English Program.

  • Demonstrated ability to build, maintain and strengthen organizational capacity in ELL at the College.
  • Possess strong interpersonal, public relations and communication skills, with a demonstrated understanding of the prevailing issues related to international education in U.S. higher education in general, and international students in particular.
  • Innovative thinker, possess a vision for providing high ­quality ELL services, and have a facility with current technologies (i.e. including relevant student and course management systems).
  • International experience and a demonstrated commitment to diversity and multiculturalism and empowering students is required.


Preferred qualifications:
  • Professional experience teaching overseas, and/or working or studying internationally
  • Competency in, or advanced study of, at least one language other than English.


Grade of Position: A17E

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 36.25

Hiring Range: $73,550.00 - $77,100.00

This position will be exclusively represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Local 888 for purposes of wages, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
