Appointment: This is a part-time, unbenefited position. 10 hours per week during the 9-month academic year with summer off.

Position Summary: The Trail Operations Advisor is to provide guidance to student journalists and critique published work. Additionally, The Trail Operations Advisor may teach STAF 101 (0.25 activity unit) when it is offered. The Trail Operations Advisor should have worked in Journalism and be familiar with the ethics of Journalism. The Trail position is approximately 10-15 hours per week during the academic year.The Trail Operations Advisor is to provide guidance to student journalists and critique published work. Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Advise students in ethical writing and journalistic practices
  • Remain aware of their obligation to defend and teach without censoring, editing, directing or producing.
  • Demonstrate a firm dedication to accuracy, fairness, facts and honesty in all content of the medium.
  • Critique student writers, artists, and editorial work
  • Work closely with the Trail Editor in Chief(s), through regular check-in meetings
  • Submit Weekly Reports to the ASUPS Vice President for timesheet approval

Supervisory Responsibilities
    Assist Editor in Chief with discussing management strategies and addressing disciplinary issues. Ensure the regular publication of the Trail issues, whether it be weekly, biweekly, etc.

Budget Responsibilities
    Advise EIC, or relevant staff member, in managing the Budget

Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with the journalistic code ethics
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, including workshop presentations
  • Ability to mentor and help students with their professional media work
  • Management skills including budgeting, personnel, operations direction
  • Ability to manage projects
  • Good understanding of conflicts of interest issues arising from multiple roles/positions
  • Ability to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community


Compensation and Benefits: Decisions about starting salaries are made based on the extent and relatedness of the candidate's education and experience and on internal equity and market considerations.

This position is not eligible for benefits.
