About the Position:
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at California State University, Fullerton offers a rigorous and innovative curriculum that focuses on developing problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills and provides high quality education in chemistry and biochemistry. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as an Equipment Technician III, Electro-Mechanical. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

The Equipment Technician III, Electro-Mechanical repairs and maintains teaching and research electronic and mechanical analytical instrumentation. Perform routine and preventive maintenance on electro-mechanical equipment in the teaching and research labs, develops plans, methods, and techniques to prevent and rectify electrical and mechanical equipment malfunctions. Test teaching lab equipment to maintain readiness for each term, repairing malfunctions when found. Assists faculty in design and fabrication of prototype electro-mechanical equipment or modification of existing equipment. Prepares for and installs new equipment acquired by the department and faculty members. Trains students, staff, and faculty on the proper use of scientific equipment, which often has electronics and control software. Consults with faculty and vendors in determining new equipment purchases. Trains, oversees, and coordinates activities of student assistant. Other duties as assigned.


Essential Qualifications:
Three years of progressively responsible journey-level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair, and operation of scientific or technical equipment in the specialty area including one year involving design modifications and fabrication of complex and highly technical equipment. Two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in assigned area as well completion of an apprenticeship program or completion of full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.


Preferred Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in a scientific field and/or a degree in electronics or equivalent job-related experience of at least three years on a progressive level. Comprehensive knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the construction, installation, maintenance, repair and operation of electronic and mechanical instrumentation and accompanying computer-controlled software. Thorough knowledge of equipment design, repair and troubleshooting and overhaul of electronic and mechanical equipment. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with students, staff, faculty, and vendors. Ability to make mathematical computations as required.

Experience in maintaining and/or repairing sophisticated laboratory equipment such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), spectrometers, Liquid Chromatography and Gas Chromatography instruments, and Mass Spectrometers. General knowledge or electronic and mechanical test equipment and equipment used in teaching and research laboratories. Knowledge of equipment design and equipment computer interfacing. Ability to write standard operating procedures for electronic and mechanical equipment and to train students, staff and faculty on use of that equipment.
