At P3, we envision a world where people’s participation in public life is possible, probable, and powerful: people across race and class have to be able to participate, they have to want to participate, and their participation has to matter. Realizing this vision necessitates designing a new civic architecture that enables people to engage in public life in ways that are grounded in their own experience, connected to one another, and organized through vehicles of collective action that give people ownership over the ongoing process of systemic struggle and change.

We are a multi-disciplinary research lab based at the SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University committed to learning and shared inquiry that meets the twin goals of relevance and rigor while helping to realize our vision. Our work simultaneously pushes the frontiers of strategic thinking in organizing and knowledge-building in academic scholarship.

Job Description:

The P3 Lab at the SNF Agora Institute is seeking a Research Scholar to serve as Research Manager. The Research Manager will support the Faculty Director and Lab Director in advancing new research projects and using our research to agitate for learning among organizations and practitioners seeking to build power centered in people.

Responsibilities will primarily include leading, engaging in, and managing core research projects of P3 throughout the full research cycle, including literature reviews, research design, data collection and analysis, and writing up results in both academic and practitioner-friendly formats. Additionally, the Research Manager will support the Directors in developing and executing praxis projects (including communities of practice for scholars and practitioners); conducting discrete research and writing projects; managing public relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders involved in the lab’s research; and creating briefings and related materials of the research generated in support of P3’s mission.

This position plays an integral role in the lab’s mission of simultaneously pushing the frontiers of strategic thinking in organizing and knowledge-building in academic scholarship. Candidates will need to use independent judgment and initiative to conduct research, manage relationships, help develop strategic direction of projects, and independently advance research and writing projects. The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal and writing skills and be interested in exposure to a wide range of work related to people’s fight for power and voice in public life. Other duties may be assigned, including administrative work related to the research projects, as deemed appropriate by the Directors. This is a one-year position, beginning as soon as possible, with renewal after that date contingent on the receipt of additional extramural funding. This benefits-eligible position carries an annual salary of $60,000-$70,000 depending on experience and expertise. Remote work with regular travel to Baltimore is possible depending on experience.

NOTE: Travel, evening and weekend work will be required at times to related to fieldwork for our research projects.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • (70%) Lead both short- and long-term research projects, including:
    • Participating in organizational processes for deciding what studies to conduct, together with practitioners and the P3 Lab team
    • Coordinating communities and researchers to develop study designs that bridge practitioner and scholarly goals
    • Developing research teams that support cross-generational learning in the lab
    • Coordinating literature reviews
    • Conduct data collection and analysis
    • Write reports and memos
    • Contribute to academic publications as relevant
  • (20%) Support the Directors in developing communities and creating reports generate learning in the field
  • (10%) Other duties as assigned
  • Ph.D. or Master’s degree in political science, sociology, or related areas by the start of the appointment
  • Outstanding mixed-methods research and writing skills
  • Experience working with constituency-based organizations either as a researcher or as a community organizer
  • An understanding of the field of constituency-based organizations and social movements in the United States, as well as the ecosystems of funders, political parties, etc. they operate within
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to simultaneously manage multiple large-scale projects
  • Experience and interest in convening and managing events for diverse stakeholders (e.g., conferences, symposia, workshops)

  • Ability to work independently and in teams

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
