The Graduate School ( www.graduate.umaryland.edu/ ) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is seeking applicants for a full-time, non-tenure track, 12-month appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, in the Health Professions Education (HPE) PhD program. UMB Graduate School Assistant/Associate Professor appointments are long- term, renewable contracts and are eligible for promotion. The Health Professions Education (HPE) Program offers both a PhD and MS degree (Fall 2022). The program offers learners the opportunity to expand knowledge in the health professions education and engage in the application of the learning sciences to advancing HPE research, teaching, and evaluation. The MS program offers an educational leadership track for those interested in leading the delivery and improvement of educational programs and curricula.

Responsibilities
  • Teach in the HPE PhD Program including contributing to the curriculum design and development efforts of the curriculum.
  • Prepare online course materials following the standardized instructional design process established by the Graduate School.
  • Provide feedback, guidance, and mentoring to HPE learners.
  • Mentor and advise HPE learners on scholarly research projects that lead to peer-reviewed publications/dissertations.
  • Participate in professional, university, and departmental service activities to advance UMB’s mission.
  • Participate in HPE program activities, including orientation, selection committees, impact institutes (weeklong, intensive, topic-specific, research development, and presentation weeks), and office-hours, as needed.
  • Generate an independent program of research scholarship resulting in peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and securing educational grant funding through public and private sources/agencies.
  • Develop collaborative research opportunities within the HPE program, across disciplinary boundaries, and across schools at UMB
  • Represent UMB, the HPE program, and the Graduate School at national meetings and organizations and through the dissemination of high-quality research, such as in Division I of the American Educational Research Association, the Medical Education Scholarship Research and Evaluation section (MESRE) of the Group on Educational Affairs (GEA) of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), or other similar educationally focused conferences.
  • Contribute to an environment that inspires, recognizes, and rewards educational scholarship, teaching, and innovation at UMB, to stimulate the intellectual discourse needed to reimagine professional and graduate student education for the future.
  • Develop and make available resources, such as faculty development programs, that will help advance the career path for educators at UMB, across professions.
  • Provide UMB faculty new to educational research, guidance and collaboration on completing educational grant applications.
  • Act as a liaison to the Medical Education Leadership Academy (MELA) in the School of Medicine (UMSOM). Provide medical education leadership, scholarly guidance, and experience in effective survey research, medical education instructional strategies, curricula;
  • Collaborate on the design of educational projects that have a demonstrable application to current med ed practice for educational enhancement, innovation, or improvement.
Qualifications :

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities : Experience with quantitative and/or qualitative methods and analysis; track record of successful research advising, teaching, and scholarship in health professions education or educational settings. Current licensure in one’s principle professional field (if applicable) and teaching experience required. Prior evidence of participation and presentations at medical education conferences

Minimum Education : Minimum of Ph.D. in a social/behavioral science, education, evaluation and assessment, sociology, or related field, plus substantial experience in an academic environment.

Minimum Experience: 2 years as academic faculty in professional discipline, preference for those with >5 years of experience.
