Job Summary:

The Associate Director for Residential Academic Initiatives serves as a Central Staff member for the Office of Residence Life. In addition to providing guidance, direction, and support for the overall mission, vision, and goals of the residential program at Miami University, the Associate Director is responsible for oversight of the departmental initiatives related to academic and large scale departmental initiatives. Like all members of the Office of Residence Life, the Associate Director is charged with shaping the environment and experiences of students by providing services and programs focusing on the learning outcomes for the Office of Residence Life. This position is a live-out position and reports to the Director for Residence Life.



Listed below are specific job duties of the Associate Director position as well as minimum professional standards expected of all Residence Life employees. These responsibilities encompass student and community development initiatives, both proactive and reactive, that directly influence the success of our residential students.

Residential Academic Initiatives
• Assist in the creation, implementation and training on the vision for residential academic initiatives in the Office of Residence Life
• Collaborate with the Campus Services Center to facilitate LLC assignment processes
• Proactively build partnerships with current and potential stakeholders in order to provide timely and engaging co-curricular options for students
• Chair the Residential Academic Initiatives Workgroup (membership external to ORL)
• Chair the Residential Academic Initiatives Committee (membership internal to ORL)
• Communicate regularly with faculty members, academic departments, and program offices to support residential academic initiatives
• Collaborate with stakeholders (which could include faculty, staff, and paraprofessionals) to develop integrated living/learning experiences for students in our learning environments
• Co-Supervise 3 master’s level live-in Area Coordinators in collaboration with an Assistant Director of Residence Life
• Coordinate enrollment of LLC classes with students, Campus Services Center, faculty, instructors, and the Office of the Registrar
• Serve on the Orientation Planning Group (for non-divisional advisors) and assist with Orientation Registration process for LLC classes
• Coordinate departmental staff responsibilities in teaching first year transition courses (UNV 101 and CEC 101)
• Coordinate the Resident Assistant course (EDL 301); teaching, recruiting and training instructors and developing curriculum
• Provide leadership on assessment for residential academic initiatives
• Serve on select LLC Advisory Councils, as needed
• Coordinate faculty recognition/involvement efforts in department
• Collaborate with Residence Life staff, as well as other staff and faculty, to identify efforts to increase initiatives focused on student learning
• Coordinate residential retention initiatives; including Second Year Student Initiatives, Student Created Community LLC Process, Emerging Adulthood Committee, etc
• Represent ORL at Make It Miami Days and other admission events
• Represent ORL on various university-wide academic initiative committees

Large Scale Initiatives
• Coordinate department’s programming efforts for Welcome Week and First 50 programming
• Provide oversight of departmental processes for when vendor contracts are required for services

Overarching Staff Expectations
• Serve as a role model for all hall staff and residents in personal and professional behaviors
• Practice ethical stewardship of university resources
• Collaborate with and support live-in staff members on departmental, divisional, and institutional priorities
• Demonstrate a consistent willingness to work with individuals from different race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, ability, ideology, religion, and national origin backgrounds
• Participate in the recruitment, selection, and training of staff members for the Office of Residence Life
• Interpret and enforce Miami University, policies, rules, and procedures
• Build and maintain positive professional relationships within the department and across the university
• Fulfill other general duties assigned by the Office of Residence Life, Division of Student Life and Miami University


Minimum Qualifications:

This position required a master’s degree, in higher education or a related field, plus a minimum of 6 years of full-time, post-masters experience. The individual in this position must have experiences in residence life, living learning communities, programming, long-range planning, developing and maintaining effective cross campus partnerships, as well as a proven ability to relate to a diverse population.
