AHS – PART TIME MENTOR
TRUMAN MIDDLE COLLEGE

Consider joining Truman College as an AHS – Part-Time Mentor at Truman Middle College. Our Middle College is an Alternative High School within the Youth Connection Charter School Network, open to eligible youth between 17 to 21 years old.

Truman Middle College aspires to empower students to rise above barriers in order to become successful college and career ready individuals. Students learn to advocate for themselves and overcome obstacles, working towards completing their high school diploma and applying their knowledge and learned skills to transition to higher education and fulfilling professions.

Reporting to the Principal, an AHS – Mentor works closely with and mentors students identified as struggling to consistently attend classes, complete homework assignments, and successfully pass their class courses to graduate. Builds relationships with students and provides them with needed encouragement, guidance, and support to aid them in achieving their academic goals. Performs related duties as required.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Meets with students and parents to address lack of attendance issues and the barriers that impede success in completing high school.

· Works with students to help them overcome obstacles and develop strategies to avoid missing classes and regularly attend school.

· Provides referrals to students and families for needed social services as needed.

· Monitors students’ daily attendance, checking to see if they are in school and attending classes as scheduled.

· Calls students and their parents when they are absent to discuss reasons for absence and the impact of absence on their schoolwork.

· Provides students with an understanding on the importance of education, including the link between education, a career, and a better life.

· Attends classes with students, providing guidance on how to focus and listen during class, ask questions, and take good notes.

· Counsels students on good study habits, helps them organize their class papers and assignments, and assists them in understanding and completing homework assignments.

· Serves as a positive role model by modeling desirable behaviors such as patience, follow-through, goal setting, and reflective listening.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training and Experience

· Must have at least an Associate’s Degree or two years of college from an accredited college or university. Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Counseling, or Education preferred. Master’s Degree in School Counseling desired.

· Must have experience working with high-risk youth in a school setting.
