The mission of the Office of University Relations ( OUR ) is to strengthen brand identity and increase local, regional and national awareness of the UNCW mission; enhance internal communications between administration and faculty/students and among cross-departmental colleagues; and to support the university through engaging messaging, dynamic digital and print collateral, and vibrant photography and video productions. OUR collaborates with members of the UNCW community to promote key university initiatives, research and achievements.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position

Duties include researching, writing and editing news and feature stories for the university’s digital and print publications; utilizing marketing skills to develop Web content for university audiences; collaborating with communications colleagues on internal and media-related writing and outreach as required; providing support for other Office of University Relations ( OUR ) projects as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred education, professional skills and experience

  • Knowledge of and experience with developing content for digital platforms, familiarity with journalistic principles and practices, and mastery of standard English and grammar rules for writing and editing
  • Experience with using content management systems and familiarity with best practices for search engine optimization and accessibility of web content
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply university style guidelines and AP style to publications
  • Ability to translate complex ideas and objectives into effective communications
  • Strong skills in writing editing both news/features and marketing copy are essential
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects/priorities/deadlines and work independently with little supervision
  • Ability to think strategically about how best to communicate with internal and external audiences, including developing appropriate content that furthers the university’s goals, analyzing and using existing communication tools, and determining the appropriate applications of web, print, video, social media and/or other communication tools that would best address specific promotional needs
  • Ability to build positive relationships with members of the campus community and offer creative solutions to content challenges
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities simultaneously in a high-pressure environment while maintaining concentration and a level temperament
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, be creative, operate effectively as a team member, work under pressure with strict attention to detail, ability to converse effectively and maintain contact with faculty, staff, the media, parents, alumni, students, donors, vendors and government officials
