Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job
• This position will work in various aspects of the public health undergraduate and graduate programs – primarily in epidemiology, and other closely related fields of public health such as environmental health sciences, global health, biostatistics, or health management.
• Faculty maintain excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service to the department and university. A sustained research agenda with a focused emphasis on grant writing and peer-reviewed publications in appropriate journals will be expected once hired. Teaching assignments may include epidemiology, biostatistics, and public health foundation courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
• Faculty provide service to enhance the professional attributes of students (many are first generation).
• The Department of Population Health at SHSU will pursue the Council on Education for Public Health ( CEPH ) accreditation of its BS and MPH degrees in public health; faculty will assist in maintaining and ensuring compliance with CEPH standards, guidelines, and assessments.
• Other duties performed as requested. Educational Requirements for the Position
Earned Doctorate from an accredited university in public health, preferably including a major or minor in epidemiology. Doctorates in closely-related disciplines (e.g., Biostatistics, Health Sciences, Environmental Health, Healthcare Administration) from an accredited university with an application of epidemiological studies in doctoral research and additional higher-level coursework in epidemiology will also be considered. Experience Required for the Position
Experience in public health or health management fields and instructional experience. Other Requirements for the Position
Preference is for professional experience in public health or health management fields and teaching experience in institutions of higher education.

Cover letter, statement of research (past, present, and future), and the teaching philosophy should include:

Documentation of a clearly illustrated research line evidenced by publications and/or presentations in a specific topic and the development of grant proposals and/or how the candidate’s education and experience will lead to said research line, publications, and grants. Documentation can also show current and future proposed projects and how this 5-year research plan will lead to publications and grants. Scholarship that covers a wider array of topics may be appropriate. The following indicators are not necessary but can demonstrate the quality of published scholarship: lead authorship on publications; descriptions of the peer-review process; published reviews of the candidate’s work; journal impact factors; acceptance rates; and number of citations, application of the research, and clinical relevance .

Presentation of how the overall composite of the candidate’s scholarly activity is substantial, balanced, and shows promise for continued publications and grant proposal development. Candidate should outline a five-year research plan and indicate how this research fits in with faculty in the Department of Population Health, the College of Health Sciences, and Sam Houston State University.

Demonstration of engagement and leadership in service in the field of public health and/or epidemiology. This may include professional experience and/or service to the department, college, university, profession, and/or community. A sustained record of service and leadership to the university, profession, and community will be required once hired.

Demonstration of instructional experience may be indicated through descriptions of pedagogical methods of teaching, modes of instruction, examples of instruction, and teaching evaluations from students or peers. Special Instructions Summary
