Position Summary
The University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking candidates for the role of Director of the Veterinary Clinical Skills Laboratory. The Director will hold a 12-month position at the rank of Clinical Assistant, Clinical Associate, or Clinical Professor. The successful applicant will join and work with the team in the Office of Academic Affairs, including the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, the Assistant Deans for Pre-Clinical and Clinical Academic Affairs, Director of Instructional and Curricular Innovation, Director of Assessment, and nine support staff positions including a clinical skills laboratory technician to be hired with input from the individual in this position.
The academic focus for the position is to develop and manage the clinical skills laboratory. The successful applicant is also expected to participate in instruction of clinical and professional skills. Participation in scholarly activity regarding evidence-based veterinary medical education is expected as a collaborative or sole investigator but establishing an independent research program is not required. The successful candidate will be highly motivated and have an innovative approach to advancing clinical skills instruction, including learning and assessment.
The College is undergoing a major revision of the curriculum, from a traditional “Flexner” discipline-based structure to a systems-based model that integrates content across disciplines as well as between foundational and clinical sciences. Concurrent with the development of systems-based courses are new Professional Skills and Clinical Skills courses that will run in parallel throughout each semester. Thus, this is an exciting opportunity to be involved in the development of these courses at the ground level.
The College has a split campus with the first- and second-year instruction occurring on the main campus of the University of Georgia while the third- and fourth-year instruction is conducted at the Veterinary Medical Center ( VMC ). The VMC is approximately 2.5 miles from main campus and home to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and Veterinary Education Center. The majority of clinical skills instruction will occur on the main campus. At the main campus location there is a dedicated laboratory for teaching surgery. A dedicated teaching space including holding areas and housing for large animal species is currently under construction. Additionally, starting in the fall of 2021, a five thousand square foot building will become available as dedicated space for conducting different aspects of clinical and professional skills instruction.
The College of Veterinary Medicine values all members of the university community, recognizing that differences in experience and culture can only lead to a more well- rounded, accepting academic environment. We have an expectation that all employees will demonstrate a contribution to diversity and inclusion as embodied in our Principles of Community (http://vet.uga.edu/principles-of-community ).
Special Instructions to Applicants
Qualified applicants are invited to submit: (1) a letter of intent including professional interests and career goals; (2) curriculum vitae; and (3) name, mailing address, and contact information for three professional references. Candidates are encouraged to identify their strengths/experiences in these areas as it relates to teaching, research and/or service in their cover letter.
