Position Function:

The Executive Director of Advising provides leadership and has supervisory responsibility for the administration and the overall operation of the Center for Academic Advising. The Executive Director reports to the Associate Vice President for Student Success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Supervises the Director of the University Academic Advising Center.
2. Supervises the Center for Academic Advising.
3. Supervises new Professional advisor(s) in the Center for Academic Advising.
4. Provides leadership in developing and maintaining a learner-centered, case management and responsive advising system for new and continuing students.
5. Ensures students' progression toward their educational goals is monitored and that advising staff utilizes various strategies/tools to address academic persistence, engagement, and completion.
6. Coordinates and collaborates with Divisions of Student Affairs and Diversity and Inclusion.
7. Coordinates oversight of Academic Probation and Suspensions for first year students with the Learning Center.
8. Coordinates with Financial Aid Appeals processes and procedures related to unsatisfactory Student Academic Progress (SAP).
9. Part of the team responsible for the curriculum development of First Year Experience classes.
10. Works collaboratively with advisors, faculty, administrators, and other student services to ensure success of the college's proactive, guided pathways advising model and the delivery of advising to students.
11. Establishes and maintain effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students and public.
12. Establishes a positive rapport and be a liaison with all advisors, faculty, and staff.
13. Oversees the development, deployment and assessment of a comprehensive new student professional advising program.
14. Recommends personnel for hire and supervises academic advisors in the Center for Academic Advising. and other advising support staff.
15. Provides evaluations and performance feedback accordingly and in a timely manner.
16. Utilizes student success data and student development research to inform decisions regarding student learning and advising program outcomes, including assessing outcomes toward continuous improvement.
17. Stays abreast of emerging and current research, advising technology and success strategies to provide intentional advising interactions between students and the advisement center staff.
18. Assists students with educational, career, personal and social development. Advocates for the advising needs of students that contribute to their successful enrollment, engagement, and completion of their educational goal.
19. Assists with advising current and prospective students on the college's offerings, academic pathways, prerequisites, programs, procedures, and services.
20. Works with appropriate individuals and various departments to maintain accurate, current academic and instructional program information.
21. Develops and maintains professional relationships with external partners to create a seamless, integrated, and comprehensive advising system.
22. Oversees the development and management of the advisement center budget.
23. Participates in professional development appropriate to the functions of the position and professional interests. Promotes and engages staff in relevant professional development activities.
24. Participates in university-wide decision-making to help coordinate services and operations and advising models throughout the campus.
25. Oversees implementation of new university advising software.
26. Works closely with Career Services to further develop an advising system that will help students see the connection between and make the best choices regarding their studio/academic classes and career/professional options and helps all students better understand options.
27. Works closely with Academic units with stand alone advisors.
28. Provides university-wide training and implementation of advising model.
29. Coordinates with the University Advising Group.
30. Maintain budget within established policies and budget parameters. In addition to maintaining an annual inventory of program equipment and supplies.
31. Coordinates university absence reporting and recording.
32. Coordinates with Admissions Counselors about promoting a wider variety of majors prior to students arriving at MSU.
33. Coordinates relationships with high school guidance counselors and administrators to develop pre-advising sessions for new incoming freshmen.
34. Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility:
Full supervisory responsibility for other employees is a major responsibility and includes training, evaluating, and making or recommending pay, promotion, or other employment
decisions.

Minimum Qualifications:

-Master's degree from regionally accredited institution.
-Five years of experience.
-Progressive experience in academic advising; three years' supervisory experience; demonstrated ability to lead a team of professionals and to build positive working relationships within a campus community and with external partners; excellent communication skills both oral and written; experience integrating the principles of face-to-face, e-advising, individual and group advising experiences into a comprehensive advising program; experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students, and the public.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Demonstrated knowledge of departmental budget development and management.
2. Experience with using career inventories, student interest and motivation assessments or other educational planning tools to inform and enhance the advising process.
3. Knowledge of various levels of education including high school, community college and four-year colleges and universities.
4. Ability to network with advisors at other educational institutions.
5. Belong to a professional advising association.
6. Ability to direct training sessions and represent the university at public appearances.
7. Ability to initiate and direct grant activities relating to student initiatives.
8. Interest in student activities that occur outside the classroom and a willingness to participate in and attend college functions.
9. Knowledge of the UCCC process and how it drives curriculum, Catalog, and degree audit
10. Knowledge of the transfer articulation system.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

1. No or very limited physical effort required.
2. No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
3. Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
