The Facilities Services department invites applications for two (2) Maintenance Tech III ’s to join their team. The position of Laborer Maintenance Tech III for the Labor Department within Facilities Services is responsible for general labor work including snow removal, sanding, and de-icing around campus drive and all parking lots. Other duties include various moves on campus, which will require furniture disassembly and reassembly, partition disassembly, and reassembly. Perform door removal and reinstallation, sidewalk demolition repair and replacement, concrete foundation repairs, as well as asphalt maintenance and installation. This role will replace fencing and operate heavy equipment including, but not limited to: Fork Lifts, Genie Boom Lifts, JLG Lift, Backhoe, Front-End Loader, Scissor Lifts, Skid steers, Plows on various equipment. Other power tools used, are Demolition saw, Jack Hammers, Hilti’s, cordless tools, and a large variety of hand tools. This position may also learn Filter/ Lube/Insulation Technician duties and may assist that shop when needed.

The person assigned to this position may supervise & lead other laborer’s, temps, and student employees with daily tasks. Additionally, coordinate & lead others regarding events, (Concerts, Graduation, large moves). The incumbent must have good customer services skills, and ability to handle multiple priorities. This position requires incumbent to develop a working knowledge of UM Campus, our safety policies and procedures, and how to properly document labor and materials utilizing timesheets, labor cards, and the work order system.

Required Skills
  • Must be able to perform heavy lifting of equipment and furniture for moves as well as capable of assembling and disassembling of furniture
  • Physical ability to work long hard days
  • Experience installing fencing
  • Must have experience operating heavy equipment (Backhoe, Skid-steer, Forklift)
  • Proven ability to operate Genie lifts
  • Knowledge and experience pouring concrete slabs, retaining walls, foundations, and footings
  • Proven leadership skills
  • Capable of assembling & disassembling partitions
  • Experience and ability to perform roofing inspections, and maintenance of drains
  • Knowledge and ability to provide quality customer service through effective and accepted quality methods and processes.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain a safe work environment; work effectively in a team environment; create and maintain a work atmosphere of trust and respect with all team members
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work with a variety of diverse groups of individuals.
  • Must be able to follow directions both written and verbal
  • Must be able to work off of blueprints, maps, and work orders
  • Applicant must have experience and knowledge to operate and maintain a variety of tools and equipment including snow removal equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to read/ follow instructions, safety information, policies, and procedures and apply critical thinking skills; write instructions and procedures
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the proven ability to interact effectively with many levels of personnel


Physical Requirements

(Qualified candidates must be able to meet minimum requirements and perform the primary functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.)

  • Lifting: Ground to 60 inches, up to 50 lbs. Ground to 30 inches, 80 lbs.
  • Carrying: Front carry up to 75 lbs. for 10 feet or less.
  • Pushing and pulling forces required (pushing and pulling materials, and during the use of tools): 100 lbs. sustained
  • Repetitive squatting on both even and uneven surfaces
  • 3-minutes of overhead work from various positions (standing, crouching, or kneeling).
  • Static forward bending from a standing, crouching or kneeling position while using tools.
  • Trunk rotation from a standing or kneeling position.
  • Balancing when climbing and working on a ladder.
  • Walking various distances, continuously, throughout the day on even and uneven surfaces.
  • Use of various grip circumferences and strengths as well as static grip positions during the use of various tools (4 1/2" to 5 1/2" circumference needing an average of 50 lbs. of grip force) and while manipulating various work materials (maximum 100 lbs.).
  • Use of foot controls and hand controls to drive and operate light and heavy machinery.


Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment .

Minimum Required Experience
  • High School diploma and three (3) of related work experience including professional experience operating heavy equipment or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must possess current driver's license


Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge and experience installing and or replacing tile
  • Asphalt repair and installation experience
  • Experience and knowledge of masonry trade
  • A CDL License is preferred for operating heavy equipment weighing 26,000 G.V.W. or heavier (May be required within 12 months of hire date)
