Department Summary
The department of University Communications is charged with telling the University of Oregon's (UO) stories to a broad range of audiences and positioning the university to succeed and thrive. The department utilizes and manages a comprehensive suite of communications tools, including public relations, branding, advertising, licensing, digital media, and more for the benefit of the university.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of User Experience, the UX Design Manager will be responsible for directing and managing the information architecture, UX design, and content strategy of UO websites maintained by University Communications, and will serve as an expert resource on UX design for all university departments and offices.
The UX Design Manager works closely with the Director of User Experience, the web services team, and communications staff to determine strategies for user experience. This position will oversee content creation within web layouts, work closely with clients in planning and executing website redesigns, and make key recommendations on how UX design, UX research, analytics, and accessibility best practices drive the implementation of content and messaging within University Communications' CMS design system.
The UX Design Manager helps to establish and disseminate standards, guidelines, policies, and best practices in CMS implementation, web documentation, accessibility, and functionality. Work is non-routine and highly dependent on the target audiences and business processes of the units being served, and is guided by principles of professional UX practice and relevant policies. The incumbent is expected to exercise great latitude in determining terms, conditions, processes, and resource requirements for digital projects.
The Marketing and Brand Strategy team follows a user-centered design process that seeks to engage end-users in all stages of design and development. The UO-branded elements are designed to provide maximum utility for various audiences visiting university websites while maintaining a consistent experience across sites.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in UX/UI design, web design, HCI, or a
closely-related field
- Four years of professional experience in a UI/UX design related
role
- Four years of professional experience planning and designing
information architecture based on UX data
- Two years of professional experience managing multiple website
projects for a larger employer
Professional Competencies - Thorough knowledge of user-centered design processes
- Ability to troubleshoot using HTML, CSS and browser web
developer tools
- Expertise with visual design and prototyping software such as
Adobe XD, Sketch
- Working knowledge of WCAG
- Desire to work hand in hand with in-house developers
- Professional written and interpersonal skills when
communicating with customers and clients
- Strong organizational skills and ability to balance multiple
assignments, work independently and as part of a team, establish
priorities, troubleshoot and solve problems, meet deadlines, and
learn new applications of technology quickly.
Preferred Qualifications - Graduate degree in UX design or closely-related
field
- Mobile UX/UI design experience
- Drupal experience
- Experience conducting user research activities such as
requirements gathering, card sorts, tree tests and/or usability
studies.
