Department Summary
The Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success (UESS) promotes academic excellence, universal access, engagement and achievement for the student scholar. UESS programs focus on the educational trajectory of the student by providing opportunities and services essential for progress toward scholastic objectives and intellectual development. UESS departments and programs serve the entire population of UO undergraduate students and partner closely with other campus units to support student success and engagement.
The Summer Academy to Inspire Learning (SAIL) program is an innovative college access program that helps local eighth through twelfth graders prepare for college, offering free one-week summer camps where students learn about various academic subjects from distinguished University of Oregon faculty members through fun social and interactive activities. The SAIL program serves thousands of students annually aimed at changing the cycle of poverty throughout the state of Oregon, and beyond. In addition, SAIL camps include sessions on the college admissions process, scholarship availability, and the financial aid process. During the school year, SAIL offers mentoring by UO college students to eligible students in local high schools who are navigating the college admissions process. The SAIL program consists of an Executive Director, a Program Manager, an Office Specialist 1, and 12-30 part-time student employees, volunteers, and interns.
Position Summary
The Program Manager (PM) is responsible for managing and coordinating the operations of the year-round SAIL pre-college programs. Programs include both summer and mentoring programs, student retention and outreach efforts. This position also develops new programming to help expand opportunities for Oregon students to participate in SAIL activities. The Program Manager reports to the SAIL Executive Director and supports efforts to build and maintain partnerships with UO faculty, staff, students and alumni; schools and school districts in Lane County and various Oregon communities; and other relevant businesses and donors. The Program Manager regularly represents SAIL, UESS, and the University of Oregon at recruitment events, summer camps, and mentoring activities - championing the UO's goals of student access and success.
The person in this position is expected to make sound, independent judgments pertaining to managing groups of minors on campus. Thi person must have a high degree of experience and comfort with risk management as it pertains to minors in an educational camp setting. The Program Manager is responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising university student staff, interns, and volunteers - providing development and leadership opportunities where possible.
The PM must have experience working with first-generation, low-income and underrepresented students of color. The PM must exhibit professionalism and collegiality in a team environment, and the ability to create a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible atmosphere in the office. This person must exhibit cultural humility and agility, with the ability and commitment to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Minimum Requirements - Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in teaching, education,
counseling, developmental education, transitional specialists,
academic coaching, experiential education, student support
services, college and career readiness, recreational administration
or related field.
- Three years of full-time professional work experience managing
and developing programs in a youth-related or similar
field.
- Two years of experience in hiring, training, supervising,
scheduling, coordinating and evaluating student staff, preferably
experience with student staff.
Professional Competencies - Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of
stakeholders including students, families, donors, school
administrators, faculty, and community leaders.
- Understanding of issues facing teenagers from diverse groups
(e.g. low-socioeconomic, first-generation, underrepresented
students of color, non-traditional, and under-prepared
individuals).
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to set operational goals from strategic
plans.
- Demonstrated high-level organizational skills with the ability
to prioritize and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced,
detail-oriented, and time-sensitive environment.
- Ability to recognize situations that warrant initiative and
move forward without hesitation; resolving issues, problems, or
situations.
- Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Suite (or similar).
Ability to produce professional correspondence, documents, data
reports, and presentations.
- Knowledge of university policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications - Work experience with residential youth programs
- Experience working with teenagers from diverse and/or
underrepresented backgrounds, including lower-income and/or
first-generation college-going students, in support of an inclusive
and welcoming environment.
- Risk & behavior management experience in an academic or
camp setting serving minors.
- Experience and/or commitment to student learning and
development in regards to the pursuit of higher education,
knowledge of college access, barriers to education, and student
success initiatives.
- Grant writing, or similar administrative writing,
experience.
- Proficiency using software applications for database
management, word processing, Excel, registration management, and
personnel tracking.
- Oral and written Spanish Language fluency including the ability
to translate written materials.
