The Urology Department seeks a Research Program Assistant who will join our team of physicians, scientists, and laboratory technicians for bladder exstrophy-epispadias research in the division of Pediatric Urology. The position is crucial for the success of several ongoing and upcoming clinical research projects and will work with the Principal Investigator (PI) and other study coordinator(s) to organize and conduct research. The Research Program Assistant will be responsible for recruiting and scheduling study participants, organize and maintain study related database and communicate regularly with the PI and study team.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Recruit and screen study participants according to protocol eligibility criteria.
  • Schedule appointments for study participants.
  • Review study protocol and obtain informed consent from study participant and file in research record.
  • Administer survey questionnaires and interviews.
  • Perform routine clinical procedures, e.g. take vital signs – blood pressure, height, weight, etc.
  • Knowledgeable of study protocols to ensure study activities are performed correctly and completely.
  • Maintain organized filing systems for participant’s follow-up tracking according to HIPAA and IRB regulations and guidelines.
  • Create study related materials including labels/boxes for test tubes, checklists, etc.
  • Collect data from patients’ medical records and enter into database.
  • Run routine queries of the data.
  • Interact regularly with members of the research team.
  • Perform sample processing (labeling, organizing, freezing, centrifuging, pipetting, and shipping).
  • Assist with research presentations for national and international conferences.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • 2 years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some related coursework or administrative experience.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    Proficiency in the use of software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing. Has excellent oral and written communication skills. Has strong interpersonal, organizational and time management skills. Excellent attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple projects at once, and effectively prioritize each. Has basic knowledge of medical terminology. Must adhere to guidelines regarding honest reporting of sensitive and confidential patient information. Understands the importance/impact of data integrity in terms of patients, study results, costs, quality of service and scientific research in general. Regular contact with physicians, other health care personnel and occasionally, patients, requires the use of good judgment, tact and sensitivity.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk or sit for an extended period of time.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
