THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the California State University, East Bay is the home of the Geology and Environmental Science programs. Located on the tectonically active Hayward fault, we offer a variety of opportunities for students to obtain experience in lab- and field-based studies. We are a small department that prides itself on a feeling of community. Small class sizes guarantee close interaction between students and faculty, with personal attention at all levels.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION: We seek a Geoscientist with expertise in environmental geology or engineering geology. The candidate should have an interest in geologic hazards, including faults, landslides, liquefaction or in the effects of climate-induced changes such as fire and drought on humans. Expertise in California environmental Geoscience would be an asset. The person in this position will teach courses in geology and environmental science, including general education classes and classes for majors at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay may include courses at the Hayward, Concord, and Online campuses. In addition to teaching, all faculty have advising responsibilities, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities.

RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.

DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Fall Semester 2022


QUALIFICATIONS: PhD or equivalent degree in a related field is required (earth science, environmental science, environmental geology, geology, civil engineering). Willingness to teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate level in geology and/or environmental science, and develop a student-centered, externally funded research program in a culturally diverse community. The candidate should be a dynamic teacher-scholar who employs innovative, evidence-based teaching practices and has a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education. Experience with field methods and the ability to teach them to students. Competence in California environmental geoscience topics. Candidates should demonstrate experience in teaching, mentoring, research, or community service that has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence .
