ADULT EDUCATOR - CONTEXTUALIZED LANGUAGE ARTS (PART TIME)

OLIVE-HARVEY COLLEGE

Olive-Harvey College is looking for a part time Adult Educator to teach the contextualized career pathway reading and writing component of an Adult Education Bridge to Transporation, Distribution, & Logistics (TDL). The goal is preparing students who test at the High Intermediate Adult Basic Education level for successful transition to a Transportation, Distribution, & Logistics (TDL) certificate or degree program; to pass the GED test; and/or to qualify for entry level employment. Ability to teach during the day is required.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops class syllabus, instructional materials lists and lesson plans based on the ICCB-approved bridge course syllabus and City Colleges-approved bridge curricula. Responsible for sharing class syllabus with students at beginning of the course.
  • Designs and delivers instruction aimed at substantially increasing students’ reading and writing skills through lessons contextualized to the Transportation, Distribution, & Logistics (TDL) industry. Incorporates career exploration, job readiness, and college readiness skills in lesson plans and instruction.
  • Employs a variety of teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, demonstrations, projects, and field trips. Uses a combination of large and small-group activities, and incorporates technology into instruction.
  • Adapts teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students’ varying needs, abilities, and interests.
  • Assigns and reviews class work and homework.
  • Works to optimize student outcomes by monitoring student progress on an ongoing basis through the use of oral and written assessments, standardized tests, and classroom observation. Refers students to tutoring services as needed.
  • Stays abreast of developments in andragogy and adjusts teaching methods accordingly.
  • As a bridge program team member, attends staff meetings and collaborates with other bridge instructors, as well as transition specialists and occupational program faculty as needed, to plan and coordinate effective instructional and transition strategies.
  • Attends regular staff meetings with Adult Education administrators and coordinators to stay informed on program initiatives, policies and procedures.
  • Maintains accurate and complete student records including daily attendance and assigns grade designations as required by state, district, and college policy.
  • Assists with program registration.
  • Attends college or district-sponsored staff development activities as required.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MEd, MA, or MS from a regionally accredited university/college in mathematics, engineering, or related field
    • Other degrees will be considered if candidate demonstrates skill in area of instruction by both passing the GED practice examination and completing a satisfactory teaching demonstration
    • International degree(s) must be evaluated by a certified agency (e.g., ECE, WES, etc.)


OR

  • BS or BA from a regionally accredited university/college in mathematics, engineering, or related field
    • Other degrees will be considered if candidate demonstrates skill in area of instruction by both passing the GED practice examination and completing a satisfactory teaching demonstration;
    • International degree(s) evaluated by a certified agency (e.g., ECE, WES, etc.);
  • BA or BS degree in another degree supplemented by least one of the following:
    • 15 graduate hours or more in the discipline to be taught and in good standing with the university/college
    • Current enrollment in a subject appropriate master’s degree program at an accredited university/college, or
    • Has passed the GED practice examination and/or the K-12 certification for the subject they will be teaching
  • Education, training, and/or experience reflect knowledge of current adult education classroom assessment techniques.
  • Has coursework, professional development, and/or significant experience in providing contextualized instruction.
  • Must be proficient in the use of technology as it applies to instruction, i.e., desktop and laptop computers, LCD projectors, email, internet, and software programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel,and PowerPoint.
