Haverford College invites applications to our available full time, exempt (at least 37.5 hours per week), benefit eligible Instrument Specialist position in the Department of Chemistry.

The Instrument Specialist's responsibilities include the maintenance and repair of departmental instrumentation, training and assisting faculty members, students and others in the proper use of the instruments (including both data acquisition and analysis), and ensuring (with support from departmental faculty and College housekeeping staff) that the departmental instrument facilities offer a clean and safe working environment. Departmental instrumentation includes, but is not limited to, high field NMR, IR, UV-Vis, and fluorescence spectrometers, LC-MS, GC, GC-MS, and HPLC instrumentation.

Major Primary Responsibilities: The major responsibilities of the Instrument Specialist include operation, user training, maintenance, and repair. The successful candidate will regularly engage with departmental faculty, staff, and students, as well as with College facilities and external repair and maintenance staff.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

· Weekly inspection of instruments

· Regular preventive maintenance (on cycles appropriate for each instrument)

· Troubleshooting equipment malfunctions

· Serving as liaison between the department and other service departments within the College and outside the College

· Upgrades and minor repairs

· Development of training protocols

· Regular training of users in proper and safe use of instruments

· Support in the acquisition, analysis, and maintenance of data

· Support of teaching laboratories and their instrument needs

· Working with users to ensure that the areas surrounding the departmental instruments remain clean and safe

· Overseeing scheduling procedures, at times when demand for instrument time is high

· Maintaining maintenance logs for each instrument, ensuring that user manuals and/or standard operating procedures are readily accessible to interested users, and working with faculty to plan maintenance and replacement cycles

· Writing and maintain documentation for performance of essential and repeated maintenance tasks, and ensuring that appropriate faculty or staff members are trained in these tasks (in order to provide backup for the Instrument Specialist).

Chair-chemistry department

(with regular consultation with KINSC support staff, organized by the Stockroom manager)

Essential or Non-essential Employee:

This status determines for the identification, treatment of time, and use of “Essential Personnel” during campus emergencies, including those that dictate suspension of services and/or closure of operations, i.e. inclement weather. During an emergency, Essential Personnel are required to be on campus in order to provide services that relate directly to the health, safety, and welfare of the College, ensure continuity of key operations, and maintain and protect College's properties.

Education, Training, Experience:

1. Bachelor's or higher degree in the sciences, and/or significant work experience with scientific instrumentation

2. General expertise in electronics and electronic devices

3. General expertise in computers and scientific software

4. Willingness/eagerness to learn and continue training as appropriate

5. Ability to work with students, faculty, and staff with diverse backgrounds and interests

6. Desire to be part of a student-centric teaching and research training enterprise

7. Ability to assist in our departmental curriculum and research programs of the faculty, as needed

8. Ability to communicate effectively on the phone, via email, and in person with repair personnel from instrument companies.
