Assessment Systems Technician

Position Summary

The University at Buffalo (UB) Office of Curriculum, Assessment and Teaching Transformation ( CATT ) seeks to hire an Assessment Systems Technician. The Technician serves as the university administrator for two applications that are essential for the assessment of teaching effectiveness and student learning at the university: the SmartEvals course evaluation platform and the Annual Academic Program Assessment Reporting ( AAPAR ) system, which is crucial for documenting program assessment work at UB for continuing accreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education ( MSCHE ).

The incumbent will manage all administer the course evaluation process at UB, including:

  • Providing oversight for system population each term;
  • Administering course evaluations according to specified timelines and policies established by the Course Evaluation Advisory Committee;
  • Creating and updating website content related to policies and procedures of course evaluations for the UBCE website;
  • Creating and maintaining training materials for instructors and student users; and
  • Monitoring the UBCE inbox and providing direct user support.




In the role of system administrator for the Annual Academic Program Assessment Reporting ( AAPAR ) system, the incumbent is responsible for:

  • Contributing to the development of policies related to annual assessment reporting,
  • Providing oversight for the technical aspects of the annual assessment reporting process,
  • Upgrading and maintaining the AAPAR system,
  • Creating and maintaining training materials for users; and
  • Providing direct user support. Through this role, the incumbent will facilitate the reporting of university compliance with the curriculum and assessment standards of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (Standards 3 and 5).


The incumbent will create and maintain the physical classroom effectiveness database in collaboration with the Learning Environments & Technologies ( LET ) team.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and at least two (2) years of experience with system administration and/or database programming.

Additional required experience includes:
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Experience working in a college or university.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), planning, organizational and analytical skills. Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with diverse populations.
  • Strong computer skills essential. Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook. Familiarity with programming languages, such as Perl, PHP, and Javascript.
  • Ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion in establishing and maintaining good working relationships.
  • A positive and professional demeanor.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A master’s degree with three (3) years of experience with system administration and/or database programming in a higher education setting are preferred.
  • Familiarity with the accreditation standards of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education ( MSCHE ) is highly desirable, as is fluency with the Perl, PHP, and Javascript programming language, as well as HTML5 and CSS3, and an understanding of GitArchives, RedHad OKD, and OpenShift.
  • Familiarity with MySQL pr PostgreSQL is an added benefit.
