Position Summary

The University at Buffalo Office of Curriculum, Assessment & Teaching Transformation ( CATT ) seeks to hire a Digital Learning Designer. The Designer will work in collaboration with the learning designers of the Teaching Transformation Team on strategic initiatives to translate an instructor’s course vision and objectives into course sites within the learning management system ( LMS ) that are consistent with the university’s (UBs) standards for course navigation, structure, and content.

The incumbent will develop and maintain course sites within the LMS corresponding to the content and structure of the Faculty Academies professional development series for university instructors and will provide content development support as Academies content is periodically reviewed and updated. In addition, the incumbent will collaborate with the other CATT operational teams to develop additional training modules from existing content relating to student learning assessment and learning environments and technologies.

The Designer will maintain a close collaboration with the UB Learns support team to stay abreast of all developments and upgrades within the LMS and may be called upon to provide direct user support as needed. The Designer will assist with direct instructional design support and delivery of professional development courses and workshops as needed.

Key accountabilities and responsibilities:
  • Serve as a Course Design Expert in UB’s LMS
  • Develop and Maintain Faculty Academies Course Sites and Participate in Ongoing Review and Content Development
  • Collaborate with Learning Designers on Strategic Initiatives to Implement an Instructor’s Vision within the LMS .
  • Serve as back-up user support for the LMS .
  • Provide direct instructor support and training delivery as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and at least two (2) years of experience in instructional design or direct support for a learning management system.

Additional required experience includes:

  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Experience working in a college or university setting with significant experience related to instructional design, course building, or support of a learning management system.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), planning, organizational and analytical skills. Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with diverse populations.
  • Strong computer skills essential. Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook and Google Docs, Sheets, Calendar, and Drive. Familiarity with common learning management systems, such as Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, or D2L.
  • Ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion in establishing and maintaining good working relationships.
  • A positive and professional demeanor.
  • Evidence of exceptional writing skills for a wide-range of applications including web, print, and video.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment, to work independently at times and collaborate with others on a creative team.

Preferred Qualifications

A master’s degree with three (3) years of experience in higher education in the areas of instruction design, direct instructional support, or user support for a learning management system. Demonstrated expertise with course building in one of the common learning management systems, such as Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, or D2L, is highly desirable.
  • Media production and communications experience in higher education, including:
    • Creative video capture using professional audio, video and lighting equipment.
    • Creative video editing skills using desktop-based programs such as Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro.
    • Creative event and commercial photography skills.


  • Experience with Adobe Experience Manager for website creation and management or other content management system, and a working knowledge of Javascript.
  • Ability to maintain mobile and studio production equipment, troubleshoot technical failures and make repair or replacement recommendations.
  • Proficiency with the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of products including InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat Pro.
