Job Summary

The lab coordinator organizes the following components to fulfill the teaching and research needs in the College of Science, Technology, and Health: education; training; maintenance of research equipment and supplies; and compliance of all research activities with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Institutional Review Board (IRB) standards for clinical research and educational activities. This position oversees compliance of faculty, staff, and students in the following areas: research ethics, first aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use, blood borne pathogens/phlebotomy procedures, radiation safety, and laboratory safety.

Essential Job Functions and Performance Indicators

The intent of this job description is to provide a representation of the types of duties and level of responsibility that will be required of positions given this title. Job Responsibilities and Execution

  • Teaches, directs, and supervises all exercise testing protocols that occur inside the lab
  • Assures all research activities comply with University, state, and federal regulations
  • Prepares IRB applications and maintains federal compliance standards for clinical research
  • Assists with and develops proficiency at preparing graphs, tables, scientific reports, presentations, and manuscripts
  • Assists with organization and teaching of lab-based classroom lessons
  • Develops and offers ongoing education on research, testing, and all aspects of the research process, including file and data management; organization of supplies and paperwork; and mentoring of students and faculty
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and assists with accounting and ordering of all materials, supplies, and equipment
  • Performs equipment maintenance
  • Develops, organizes, and promotes a training calendar for all students, faculty, and staff
  • Plans and organizes regular meetings and reports as requested by dean or lab director
  • Facilitates the determination of students’ independent research topics and study designs
  • Functions as a proactive, positive, and dynamic leader of human research


Service Excellence

  • Supports the mission of the University and serves as an ambassador of the Q2 culture of service excellence
  • Models, supports, and holds others accountable to the University’s values – integrity, dedication, excellence, creativity, and teamwork
  • Assists with peer reviews of manuscripts


Communication, Teamwork, and Collaboration

  • Identifies, organizes, and coordinates community outreach with local high schools, public service groups, other universities, professional sports teams, and private corporations
  • Assists with development of social media presence
  • Assists with updates to lab webpage
  • Operates as the first point of contact for all students, staff, faculty, and other constituents regarding all efforts pertaining to the lab’s mission and core activities
  • Fosters a transparent method of governance regarding lab procedures
  • Encourages lab constituents’ expedient communication via phone, text, and electronic means (when face-to-face meetings aren’t possible)


Job may require other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications – An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. Additional requirements may be designated by position.

  • Master’s degree in exercise physiology-related area
  • Achievement and maintenance of up-to-date education and certification in human research ethics, first aid, and CPR
  • National certifications or licenses related to strength and conditioning, sports medicine, and/or exercise testing
  • Previous coursework to include statistics, research methods, anatomy, physiology, exercise testing, and exercise prescription
  • Nutritionist or dietitian certification strongly preferred
  • Previous experience with IRB approval and ethical guidelines for conducting human research preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
  • Knowledge in areas related to clinical exercise physiology, strength and conditioning, clinical research compliance, and fitness testing
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to plan ahead, think critically, and solve problems independently
  • Organized and detailed
  • Ability to multi-task, with all tasks at various levels of completion
  • Working knowledge of internet browsers, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Canvas
  • Experience with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), Prism, and other statistical analysis software programs


Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of this job’s functions.

  • General office and/or classroom setting
  • Weekend, morning, and evening work
  • Applied exercise physiology testing, field testing, clinical research testing, and exercise training environments

  • Ability to work effectively at a computer for up to eight hours daily
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time
  • Ability to communicate with others through speaking, listening, reading, and writing
  • Stamina to complete, teach, and supervise all research testing protocols
  • Ability to coordinate and assist with moving of exercise equipment
  • Ability to stand up, bend over, kneel, and reach overhead as needed to complete research protocols
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function
