Job Details

The Department of Psychology at Occidental College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Social Psychology at the level of Assistant Professor or advanced Assistant Professor (eligible for early tenure). We hope to find someone with specific scholarly interests related to race, ethnicity, gender, age, or economic disadvantage. The position involves teaching five undergraduate courses per year in a diverse liberal arts environment at the introductory level (e.g., Introduction to Psychology, Research Methods, Introduction to Statistics) and advanced level (e.g., Social Psychology, special topics seminars). Applicants should have their Ph.D. in Social Psychology, Community Psychology, or a related field completed by the time of appointment (fall of 2022) and should have a strong commitment to teaching and demonstrated proficiency in carrying out a program of research. Previous teaching experience is required and postdoctoral research is desirable. The successful applicant will be expected to develop an independent, externally-fundable program of research that involves undergraduate researchers. The successful applicant should also be committed to undergraduate student development and original empirical research. We are open to applicants from all areas of Social Psychology but are particularly interested in those whose research informs our understanding of social change and social justice.

We strongly encourage applications from candidates who will further Occidental’s mission of excellence and equity in their teaching, scholarship, and service.

Applicants should submit the following: (1) a cover letter detailing your interest in teaching in a liberal arts environment; (2) a statement of teaching philosophy that includes a discussion of your demonstrated commitment to, past evidence of, and future plans for creating equitable opportunities for learning and mentoring especially for underrepresented students (include teaching evaluations or other evidence of effective teaching and mentoring if available); (3) a statement of research interests and experience, including how students will participate in or benefit from your research; (4) a curriculum vitae; and (5) three confidential letters of recommendation (request writers to send separately). Electronic application materials should be addressed to Dr. Andrew Shtulman, Chair, Psychology Search, and sent by email to socpsychsearch@oxy.edu. All application materials must be submitted by October 1, 2021.

Oxy College

Occidental isn’t just any liberal arts college. It fully integrates the liberal arts and sciences with the cultural and intellectual resources of a global city.

Situated on a 120-acre residential campus in the heart of Los Angeles, our location serves as a springboard for putting theory into practice and ideas into action. At Oxy, students spend as much time in the lab, the field, the community and the studio as they do in the classroom.

Oxy is a place for talented, hard-working, curious students to explore their current passions—and discover new ones. They benefit from our small-classroom environment and demanding yet supportive faculty, who are as dedicated to teaching and mentorship as their research. Our distinctive interdisciplinary and global approach gives students the chance to explore new ideas and perspectives, and connect with the world.

With more than 40 majors and minors, one-of-a-kind programs like the Kahane United Nations ProgramCampaign Semester and Rebellious Lawyering, and our emphasis on research through the Undergraduate Research Center and senior comprehensives, Occidental lays the groundwork for a compelling intellectual adventure. And the academic rigor on campus is enhanced by internships and partnerships across L.A., Southern California and beyond.

Our graduates are strategic thinkers and effective communicators. Inclusive and consciously collaborative, our students seek to embrace difference and make a difference in the world. Occidental is reinventing the liberal arts and sciences for a new generation of problem solvers, creators and thinkers. It’s an education that is distinctly Oxy.
