Job Description:

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Controller, the Staff Accountant plays a crucial role in the daily operations of the College's Finance Office. The Staff Accountant is responsible for assisting the Senior Accountant and Controller in maintaining the accuracy of all general ledger accounts and monthly and year-end close procedures.

Essential Functions:

1. General Accounting

  • Perform functions required for the daily reconciliation of cash accounts;
  • Cashier duties- electronic check deposits, apply payments to student accounts and general ledger, reconcile and prepare cash deposits;
  • Maintain fixed asset module, processing necessary monthly and annual journal entries;
  • Serve as back up to the Accounts Payable Specialist. Support including but not limited to invoice tracking, invoice entry, reconciliation, vendor research and follow up;
  • Serve as back up to the Senior Accountant when necessary;
  • Perform general ledger account reconciliations for balance sheet accounts, working towards the successful resolution of reconciling items;
  • Reconcile gifts with and without donor restrictions;
  • Prepare miscellaneous journal entries and file;
  • Assist with the preparation of annual audit schedules;
  • Perform other general accounting activities as requested.

2. Reporting

  • Prepare weekly financial dashboard reports;
  • Assist with the annual Abandoned Property Reporting process;
  • Prepare ad-hoc financial reporting, as needed.

3. Other Duties

  • Assessments of internal controls and processes; make suggestions for improvement where appropriate;
  • Assist with annual budget process by providing account analyses as requested;
  • Provide back-up support for other Finance Office functions, as needed.

Additional Functions:

  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or his/her designee;
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality, parameters of operation, professional protocols, and individual privacy.

 

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline;
  • Recent graduate or 0 to 3 years of relevant working experience;
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel;
  • Working knowledge of general accounting / finance systems;
  • Ability to effectively communicate, interact with, and support effective partnerships with customers, superiors, and peers;
  • Self-motivation, and the ability to work with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to think strategically.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in higher education;
  • Experience with Banner Finance.
