Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

 

Menlo College seeks a creative and collaborative leader for the role of Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DDEI). The DDEI is a senior-level position that reports directly to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs, and collaborates extensively with Student Affairs and others across campus.  The Director will examine Menlo’s mission/values and align them to goals of centering diversity and equity and then operationalize processes and policies that support a campus culture that champions the importance of an inclusive environment throughout the organization.

 

The Director of DEI will assess potential barriers and develop strategies focused on recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce; engaging community members/building capacity through assessing needs; seeking to understand the root of issues and then aligning actions to solve core community concerns. 

 

In addition, the Director of DEI promotes an institutional culture that values and supports equity and inclusion, advances existing academic and co-curricular programs, and implements new practices in support of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice, and guides and focuses the work of campus allies. The DDEI is expected to teach at least one course per semester.

 

Key Responsibilities

• Provide vision, leadership, and coordination to create an institution-wide framework to ensure equity, inclusion and respect for all students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors

• Partner with stakeholders across the College to build meaningful experiences to foster cultural knowledge, awareness, skills, and accountability in staff, faculty, and leaders to maintain a high standard of inclusion, diversity, equity, and belonging on campus

• Collect and provide data to Human Resources, Student Affairs, and Institutional Research to aid development of policies, programs, and educational opportunities to actively foster and maintain an equitable learning, research, and work environment for faculty, staff, and students

• Chair the Social Justice Task Force and advance existing social justice initiatives

• Serve on cross-functional committees, such as marketing and strategic planning

• Proactively identify, plan, and implement additional diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives, as needed

• Advise the President, Provost, and other senior College leaders on related issues and restorative justice

• Other duties as assigned by the Provost or President

 

Desired Education, Skills, and Experience

• 5+ years of administrative experience at a college or university with diverse learning programs

• Doctorate in a relevant field strongly preferred

• Successful record of leading and advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in an academic setting; change management expertise highly desirable

• Demonstrated ability to teach effectively at the college level

• Exceptional written and oral communication skills

• Knowledge of federal, state and local legislation related to the Equal Education Opportunities Act of 1974, Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990

• Working knowledge of historical events and causes of social injustice and specific challenges faced by Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) groups

• Experience responding effectively to politically charged or politically sensitive situations through a restorative justice lens

 

Salary and Benefits

Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience; approximate range $80-100K. Generous benefits package.
