The Office of the Vice President & General Counsel of Johns Hopkins University seeks applications to fill the position ofAssistant or Associate General Counsel (depending upon experience level) that will handle all aspects of business and commercial transactions with a primary focus on intellectual property matters. The Office of the Vice President & General Counsel provides legal counsel and representation to Johns Hopkins University and all its schools, divisions, affiliates, and related entities.The Office serves the legal needs of University trustees, officers, deans, directors, faculty, and staff in their official capacities. It also is responsible for hiring and managing all outside counsel to represent the University.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

The Assistant/Associate General Counsel will provide advice and counseling on a wide range of legal matters, with a primary focus on intellectual property matters, particularly advising the Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures Office (“JHTV”) as well as advising, representing and supporting other divisions, schools, programs, staff, faculty and administrators across JHU in multiple legal areas, including but not limited to:

  • Patent licensing and enforcement
  • Copyright and trademark
  • JHU Procurement as the primary attorney
  • Other matters as needed that fall within the purview of the Business and Commercial Transactions Group and other areas of practice within the Office of General Counsel (see: http://web.jhu.edu/administration/general_counsel/specific_practice/ )


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • JD from an accredited law school.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience practicing law in relevant legal areas with a preference for prior experience representing institutions of higher education.
  • The successful candidate will be hired either at the Assistant or Associate General Counsel level based upon their background and experience.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • The successful candidate must have strong organizational, planning, analytical and problem resolution abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including a good sense of humor.
  • Ability to understand the needs of the University and to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff and administrators and ability to work independently.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
