The Pediatrics Department seeks a Laboratory Manager whose primary role is to manage and supervise activities necessary to operate a laboratory doing research in infectious diseases and molecular imaging. Work requires knowledge of research concepts, practices and procedures, laboratory operations, regulatory requirements, and planning and budgeting. The range of duties includes but is not limited to: facility planning and maintenance, inventory control, purchasing and maintenance of laboratory equipment, fiscal and administrative services, monitoring environmental risks and quality control, maintaining animal colonies, planning and scheduling work, determining staff assignments and training need, supervising technical personnel, training new personnel on experimental procedures and regulations, and human resources management.

The Laboratory Manager has operational oversight of assigned laboratories. These include developing and implementing assays, protocols, and operating procedures, performing experimental procedures on animals, performing biochemical assays, and performing image analysis. Also assist in analysis of data, generation of graphs, and statistical analysis. The lab manager also monitors adherence to JHU and departmental and animal care and use (ACUC) policies and procedures. Communicates with ACUC and maintains animal protocol files. Provide supervision and technical assistance to research study staff on all aspects of laboratory operations, animal procedures and welfare, data collection, data management, and analysis with a high level of independence and minimal supervision. Manages preparation of reports and work with the Principal Investigator (PI) and study investigators to provide data for manuscripts and funding applications. Responsible for the efficient utilization of assigned resources and for planning future research and development, staffing, equipment and space. Develops capital and operating budget requirements designed to meet current and future needs of the laboratories.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Principal Investigator to oversee scientific management of the research laboratory. As an imaging lab that works with infectious diseases, it is preferable if the applicant is familiar with microbiology techniques, management of radioactive substances, and animal handling.
  • Responsible for compliance and audit preparation of assigned laboratory area for IRB, ACUC, Radiation Safety, Biosafety, and/or other regulatory reviews. Coordinates and maintains all regulatory binders, logs and audits.
  • Develops plans to accomplish work operations and objectives; arranges and assigns work to use resources efficiently. Plans, develops and executes research operations; arranges and assigns work to best use research project funds.
  • Order supplies using SAP. Maintain laboratory in good order, stocks of core supplies used in common by multiple investigators. Ordering of supplies and acquisition of equipment and procurement of service contracts. Coordinate major equipment purchase and installation with vendor. Maintain and repair equipment when possible or coordinate external servicing of equipment.
  • Manage inventory, ordering, and log usage of controlled drug substances. Coordinate shipping of animals; oversee that mouse colonies are being properly managed by staff.
  • Provides oversight of technical programs and administrative activities in the laboratory including quality assurance and safety programs; coordinates and manages facilities, equipment, supplies and related resources; monitors environmental risks and quality control; understands and complies with safety standards to maintain a safe environment. Operates, troubleshoots, and performs preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment related to this specialty. Orders supplies and acquisition of equipment and procurement of service contracts.
  • Plans and monitors the use of expenditures to meet organizational objectives and compliance; prepares budget documents and reports; systematically plans and monitors research project expenditures. Participates in account reconciliation and communicating with vendors, sponsors and customers regarding invoicing.
  • Recruits, selects, develops, counsels, disciplines, and evaluates performance of employees to retain a diverse workforce; administers and ensures compliance with human resources policies and procedures. Orients, trains, and develops staff of assigned laboratories. Ensures training and compliance of anyone working in the laboratory.
  • Organizes, and leads assigned meetings.
  • Point-of-contact in Emergency Preparedness Plan for the lab. In case of disaster, responsible for assuring that laboratory animals continue to receive proper care and treatment, that biological samples are kept frozen and safe, and that equipment is kept secure. Respond to calls from security and facilities management concerning power outages, plumbing and sewage problems, and alarms on freezers.
  • Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Five years related experience.
  • Proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree preferred with related graduate research. This may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Experience in a related laboratory carrying out cell a and molecular biology methods.
  • Experience in animal models.
  • Supervisory experience.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated related technical knowledge required.
  • Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment in a specialty lab.
  • Computer competency is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and training skills.
  • Experience supervising others. Experience coordinating, conducting and managing studies.
  • Experience with ACUC, biosafety and radiation safety regulatory matters.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
