THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry has a strong commitment to teaching undergraduate and master’s level students and faculty dedicated to accomplishing this goal. The department offers B.A., B.S., and M.S. degree programs in Chemistry and Biochemistry, plus concentrations in Bioanalytical & Forensic Chemistry and in Chemical Education. There are approximately 125 undergraduate and 25 M.S. students. Department facilities include teaching laboratories, research laboratories, dedicated instrumentation laboratories, a student computer room, a cold room, and a 500 MHz FT-NMR facility. The instrumentation laboratories house a GC-mass spectrometer, three gradient-capable HPLC, an ICP optical emission spectrometer, a tabletop ultracentrifuge, a spectrofluorometer, and other equipment. The organic and biochemistry teaching laboratories include instrumentation such as FT-IR spectrophotometers, gas chromatographs, UV-visible spectrophotometers, microwave synthesizers, high speed centrifuges, a molecular imaging system, a plate reader, and a thermal cycler. DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The Department seeks to fill a tenure-track position in experimental physical chemistry at the level of Assistant Professor beginning Fall 2022. Teaching responsibilities consist of lecture and laboratory courses in General Chemistry, and undergraduate and graduate courses in Physical Chemistry. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to teaching and will be expected to establish an externally funded research program suitable for B.S. and M.S. students. Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord, and Online campuses. In addition to teaching, all faculty have advising responsibilities, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities.

RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.

DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Fall semester, 2022.

QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Chemistry or a closely related field, postdoctoral training and a record of scholarly activity in experimental physical chemistry, a strong commitment to teaching, and the ability to build an externally funded research program suitable for B.S. and M.S. students are required. Teaching experience at the university level, with the ability to teach lecture and lab in General Chemistry, and the ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Physical Chemistry, are preferred.
