Job Description


The System Administrator II, Linux maintains the integrity of the OSs environment. Assists in installing, configuring and maintaining operating system servers, including web, mail and application servers, in support of processing requirements. Provides extensive operations support, file restorations, backups, disk space management, and problem resolution for operating systems platforms. Provides new hardware specifications to customers based on application needs and anticipated growth, installs new servers and maintains the server infrastructure. This position is a member of a 24/7/365 global department with travel within the LSC service area and the availability of on-call scheduling.


  1. Assists with the support of a state-of-the-art large, highly available Enterprise Linux/ERP infrastructure, along with a team of system, server, and network professionals delivering outstanding customer service
  2. Responsible for assisting with the strategic and operational design/implementation/administration of ERP systems on various operating systems supporting Oracle PeopleSoft environment
  3. The position will assist with the design, installation, configuration, administration, and system security of enterprise wide systems in a multi-platform environment
  4. Maintains and modifies backup and recovery procedures to meet high availability and mission critical business needs
  5. Designs configurations to provide capacity planning and performance monitoring/tuning of systems
  6. May commonly be part of a project team and assists on projects. May be project leader on small or task specific projects
  7. Maintains tasks, projects and activities in the IT system of Record (S-NOW)
  8. Understands and follows LSCS standard operating procedures
  9. Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned


  • Possesses skills and knowledge related to network, operating systems
  • Must have knowledge of learned routines, procedures, practices and more complex skills
  • Ability to train in certain procedures or equipment may be required
  • May require knowledge of the College's policies and procedures

  • Ability to follow IT procedures to complete work, but may recommend changes to departmental processes.
  • Linux account and access management experience is needed
  • Backup and Recovery experience
  • Shell scripting is beneficial


The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.


  • Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
  • Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
  • Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards


  • Associate’s degree and at least 4 years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Red Hat - Oracle Linux experience
  • Entry level certification in area of responsibility


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Intermediate certification in area of responsibility
  • Experience in storage technologies, security, management software packages, patching using SpaceWalk, Red Hat IDM and/or IPA, log aggregation software such as Splunk would be beneficial


Hiring salary range is $64,826 to $74,549

Lone Star College provides a hiring salary range for all posted full-time non-faculty positions. Where your salary offer would fall in that range is determined by your related experience and education.
