Job Summary

The Deputy Athletic Director for Public Relations and Content Strategy will serve as a key member of the Athletics Department Executive Staff and the Chief Communications and Marketing Officer for the Department of Athletics.

The Deputy Athletics Director for Public Relations and Content Strategy will lead all facets of department strategy for digital platforms, broad creative video and design initiatives for strategic communication with the goal of elevating the Department’s brand. The incumbent will also be responsible for the building of a first-class broadcasting team for the Department including effective production of San Jose State Athletics games/events, building relationships with traditional and non-traditional media outlets to advance the brand and exposure of San Jose State Athletics teams. Additionally, the incumbent will drive community relations, social media content, and marketing for the purpose of increasing brand exposure, generating revenue, and increasing attendance for San Jose State Athletics. The incumbent will serve as lead for the Marketing team and efforts to promote the brand, increase licensing revenues, as well as drive effective and cutting-edge communications strategies for the Department of Athletics.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong working knowledge and experience in public relations, digital broadcasting and production of athletics events.
  • Strong verbal communication skills. Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills.
  • Ability to learn and apply NCAA, MW and SJSU rules and regulations related to outside interest groups.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to apply techniques, practices and principle related to communications in the media relations areas.
  • Demonstrated ability to process sensitive information and communicate effectively with various and diverse publics using the appropriate communication tools.
  • Identify appropriate communication vehicles for appropriate athletics messages.
  • Working knowledge of sports software statistical programs created by StatCrew, GolfStat, Hy Tek and comparable companies.
  • Ability to analyze budgetary data, conduct preliminary analyses, and make accurate projections using business mathematics and basic statistical techniques; ability to develop and design databases and create related reports.
  • Knowledge of copyright and applicable laws pertaining to the media, publications and public relations.
  • General knowledge of standard office technology and systems, and software applications such as: Photoshop, Graphic Design, Video Production and video editing platforms, word processing, spreadsheet, FileMaker Pro and database management.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends.


Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in related field
  • 5+ years of progressively responsible full-time work experience in related field


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in related field
  • 10+ years’ experience in a college or university athletics public relations/broadcasting role or equivalent
  • Experience with multimedia rights, content development, video and website production and vsports statistical software program




Compensation

Classification: Administrator III
Hiring Range: Commensurate with experience
