Position Description Summary

Leads the management and oversight of rare books, manuscripts, regional history collections, and university archives. Supervises faculty and operating staff in rare books and archives areas. Engages in outreach and coordinates with donors. Coordinates engagement activities for the department. Fulfills requirements for faculty status in areas of contributions to librarianship, scholarly activity, and service. Works with library faculty and operating staff members in a consultative, collegial environment.

University and College Description:

The Northern Illinois University Libraries seek a highly engaged and innovative individual to serve as the Head of the Special Collections and Archives Department. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Collections Management, the incumbent leads the management and oversight of rare books, manuscripts, regional history collections, and university archives. The position supervises faculty and operating staff in rare books and archives areas, engages in outreach, works with donors, and coordinates engagement activities for the department. Notable print collections include dime novels, science fiction, and American popular literature. The Regional History Collection includes materials from eighteen northern Illinois counties. The University Archives contains a wealth of material about NIU and its 125 year history.

Northern Illinois University is a public Doctoral/Research university and a member of the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities, with a Carnegie classification of “high research activity.” NIU is located 65 miles west of Chicago, IL (only 16 miles from the nearest Chicago Metra station) and 99 miles south of Madison, WI. NIU’s diverse student population is 21% LatinX, 19% African American, and 6% Asian American, with international students from 118 countries. Comprised of seven degree-granting colleges (Business, Education, Engineering and Engineering Technology, Health and Human Sciences, Law, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Visual and Performing Arts) and multiple research programs, NIU is one of only three NCAA Division 1 schools in Illinois and competes in the Mid-American Conference.
Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications: · Master’s degree from an ALA -accredited program in library/information science, or equivalent degree program · Additional graduate degree · 5 years of professional experience working in library special collections and/or archives · 3 years of supervisory experience · Demonstrated scholarship appropriate to appointment at the Associate Professor level or higher
Preferred Qualifications

· Experience working with library donors · Experience designing and planning digitization for special collections or archival materials

Starting at $77k and commensurate with experience
