The Amherst College Department of Theater and Dance invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor to begin on July 1, 2022. Candidates at an advanced level of assistant professor are also encouraged to apply. Over the past two decades, Amherst College has profoundly transformed its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and nationality, among other areas. Today, nearly one-quarter of Amherst's students are Pell grant recipients; 45 percent of our students identify as domestic students of color; and 9 percent of our students are international students. We expect the successful candidate to excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion.

We seek an artist-scholar who will contribute course offerings in a primary expertise of Black Theater and Performance, who has broad knowledge of theater and dance history and theory, alongside familiarity with other under-represented areas of performance. Candidates will also have significant achievement in an area of practice, such as directing, devised or documentary theater, multi-disciplinary performance making, or performance-training expertise. The successful candidate will be passionate about fostering a critical dialogue in the classroom, and be able to make vital links between the practice and theory of performance, and to other disciplines.

Responsibilities include teaching courses in the candidate's specific areas of expertise, as well as foundational courses in performance history, literature, and theory. In addition, the successful candidate should expect to lead or direct a significant artistic project with students each academic year, along with advising honors theses in the major. Candidates must have a terminal degree (either an M.F.A. or a Ph.D.) in hand, or all requirements for the degree fulfilled by the start of the appointment. Professional experience as a director, performer, and/or performance-maker is also required. Review of applications will begin October 15, 2021, and continue until the position is filled.
