Position Summary

The Director of Institutional Research provides leadership related to the collection, interpretation, and use of institutional data for planning and decision making. The Director will work closely with faculty, staff, and administrators throughout the college to determine data needs, prepare and present reports, and provide data to support strategic initiatives.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Operational Leadership

Supervises assigned area of responsibility and staff by recruiting and hiring, assigning and delegating tasks, providing direction, resolving work problems, communicating job expectations, training employees, and developing professional growth opportunities. Coordinates activities and arranges for appropriate training and technical support.

Conducts annual employee evaluations, provides ongoing feedback and coaching, and effectively recommends pay increases, promotions and other personnel actions. Approves leaves and authorizes overtime as appropriate. Administers disciplinary actions upon approval and in collaboration with Human Resources. Interprets, explains, carries out and enforces the College's policies. Conducts pre/post event meetings with staff and other assigned groups. Provides communication to staff regarding actions and decisions of board of trustees and administration.

Business Process Management

Leads the College’s institutional research efforts. In collaboration with the Associate Vice President (AVP) or Institutional Effectiveness and other College leaders, develop and deliver a standing research and data agenda based on College needs and state and federal requirements. Supports College decision-making through research, data analysis and clear communication of results. Responds to data requests from internal and external constituents. Prepares research briefs in support of student success and other College-wide priorities.

Works with key departments to ensure accurate reporting of students and institutional data. Manages external and required reporting. Identifies appropriate data sources, coordinates the acquisition of student and institutional data; oversees development of complex data sets for analysis and reporting. Supports development of data and research tools and systems. Supports status reporting and data tracking for strategic initiatives. Supports preparation of annual strategy and impact report for the Board of Trustees and other stakeholders.

Remains current on emerging trends in higher education. Actively participates in benchmarking activities with other academic and non-academic institutions. Provides support for accreditation, grants, public policy, partnerships, assessment and/or academic program review and other areas.

Analytics for Student Support

Presents evidence of improvement based on analysis of assessment results on outcomes for student success programs and administrative educational support services. Interfaces with counterparts at partner higher education and K-12 institutions to support student success and other strategic priorities on a regional, statewide, and national basis.

Facilities & Fiscal Management

Prepares and recommends budget based on current needs and the requirements of effective operation. Ensures operations are conducted within budget parameters. Prepares and submits proposals for enhancement of services based on objective need analysis and use projections.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Develops and maintains strategic partnerships with diverse groups and communities. Partners strategically with Talent Acquisition to ensure the best Diversity, Equity & Inclusion practices are utilized in hiring that results in the hiring and retention of a diverse faculty and staff. Helps to ensure the College meets its responsibilities in identifying problem areas and systemic concerns while reporting complaints alleging discrimination. Takes responsibility for creating a welcoming, inclusive, and productive work environment where employees feel valued and able to contribute to their full potential, regardless of their differences. Assists with conducting workforce analytics to identify potential inhibitors of a workplace environment that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. Fosters and maintains a safe environment of respect and inclusion for faculty, staff, students, and members of the community.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

Manages multiple assignments of varying complexity and meets tight timelines and deadlines, with the ability to adapt to changing needs of the College and business partners. Ensures College name and image is perceived positively by external as well as internal audience/stakeholders.

Usual Physical Requirements

The physical demands of this position are those typically expected in an office environment. While performing duties of this job, the employee regularly exhibits digital dexterity when entering data into computer. The employee regularly sits, stands or walks for extended periods of time. Employee regularly uses hands to handle and count currency. Employee converses verbally with others in person and by telephone. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision when focusing on a computer screen. Employee occasionally lifts up to 10 pounds.

Working Conditions

Typical office and classroom environment. Regular exposure to moderate noise typical to business offices.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of: management principles and practices; data governance and management, organizational planning; budget management and administration; extensive database program management.

Skill in : extensive quantitative; extensive communication; collecting data, establishing facts and drawing valid conclusions; preparing and presenting reports; statistical and database application software and programming techniques (Access, Excel, Microsoft Power BI, MS SQL Server, SAS and/or SPSS); written and oral communication; leadership and interpersonal communications.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in related field and five (5) years’ experience in research and statistical analysis. State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s). An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify a candidate.

Preferred Qualifications: PhD or equivalent degree.
