Position Summary

The Advisor (Pool) provides student support services related to academic advising, career advising, and general enrollment information and support. Advisors may also assist at our Regional Learning Centers to provide support as needed. In that capacity, they would assist with all areas of academic advising, financial aid, admissions, and registration.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

STUDENT ADVISING & SUPPORT

Provides academic advising to new and returning students. Advises students on academic pathway tracks, course selection, prerequisites, and offerings in person, via phone, e-mail or other delivery formats as needed. Assists prospective, current, and returning students. Explains the college processes including those related to enrollment, and financial aid.

Provides information on programs of study and next steps for enrollment, including program admission criteria, documents needed, financial aid, new student orientation, placement testing, advising, course selection, registration. Assists student transferring from other institutions or from the College to other institutions. Uses the University Transfer Center and other resources to remain current on transfer requirements and procedures of partner institutions. Develops and clarifies educational goals by conducting interviews, analyzing student needs, and reviewing applicable transcripts and other documents. Explains educational program options and assists students with developing a plan for degree and/or goal completion. Assists students through academic recovery process to develop a plan of action to promote academic success and conducts appropriate academic counseling intervention. Provides career advising assistance to undecided students. Makes appropriate referrals for in-depth career services to the Office of Career Services.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

Provides office support, as needed answering phones, facilitating student intake and screening and greeting students. Answers student and general public basic inquiries and/or directs them to proper resources. Assists partners from other College departments such as Financial Aid with processes and tasks to address student needs.

CLERICAL

Completes and maintains required documentation. Keeps accurate records. Reviews and verifies applications, transcripts and other documents. Maintains confidentiality of student files and other sensitive subject matter. Collects and maintains student contact information for reporting purposes.

OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Manages multiple assignments of varying complexity while meeting federal as well as internal regulations and procedures, with the ability to adapt to changing needs of the College and business partners.

Hours may include working outside of a normal workweek schedule as well as working in multiple College locations as needed to meet workload demands. Pool advisors work intermittent hours based on the operational need of the department.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee regularly stands and walks for extended periods of time, and occasionally sits. Employee converses verbally with others in person and by telephone. Employee occasionally reaches with hands or arms, climbs or balances and stoops, kneels, crouches or crawls. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision when focusing on a computer screen. Employee occasionally lifts or exerts force of up to 25 pounds when moving files, boxes and other materials. With multiple conference spaces as well as meetings across the campus, employee regularly walks outside to other buildings.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Typical office environment. Regular exposure to moderate noise typical to business offices. Must travel to various Columbus State campuses and sites.

Minimum Qualifications :

Bachelor's Degree in Student Personnel, Counseling, Guidance, or closely related field. One (1) to three (3) years progressively responsible experience in student advising. State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s). An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify a candidate.
