The University of Montana invites applications for a Student Success Coordinator for the Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) grant within the College of Health Professions and Biomedical Sciences. The individual in this position will oversee the implementation of social and educational activities and events related to the purposes of the grant. This individual will set up off campus job shadowing, work with grant partners to implement student opportunities, recruitment of students into both the year-round academic academy and summer academic enrichment program, and set up mentorship activities for current students within Academy.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Must be able to work well with students
  • Knowledgeable about campus and community resources, and financial aid, since the program is targeted to college aged disadvantages students
  • Provide year-round services to all Academy students and summer students
  • Provide academic advising and mentoring and be in charge of all retention issues
  • As part of the team, individual in this position will visit schools with high Native enrollment
  • Marketing materials will be developed and distributed
  • Digital stories will be developed
  • Student and alumni teams will recruit on their home reservations
  • Partners will be utilized for recruitment and to provide primary care exposure to all students
  • Work to recruit students in high school and college year-round
  • Recruit at all pharmacy schools in order to fil the summer pre-matriculation academic enrichment summer program slots
  • Responsible for development, implementation of a recruiting plan within the HCOP grant
  • Work closely with disadvantaged students so they have knowledge about opportunities available to them within the HCOP Academy and the HCOP pre-matriculation program
  • Provide mentorship, programming, tutoring services and will serve as an excellent resource person with respect to health-related careers

Position Details
  • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, Letter of Appointment and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
  • Starting salary for this position is $50,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.


Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma (or equivalency) in addition to two (2) years of closely related experience; or any combination of experience and education that provides the competencies necessary to successfully handle the duties and responsibilities assigned to the position
  • Must have the ability to create and maintain student programs such as tutoring, mentoring, financial aid portfolios, and general support services
  • Ability to communicate and relate to persons at all levels of schooling and with community partners many of whom are health care professionals
  • Must have excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Serve as mentor and resource for students participating in the Academy
  • Ability to disseminate information regarding Academy in communities, (high schools, and colleges), coordinate family involvement, and share resources and materials
  • Ability to promote, foster, and encourage the Academy and the University of Montana to establish a health career pipeline. The pipeline will also include Native American students throughout the state of Montana attending Tribal Colleges.
  • Will require occasional travel to the various locations in the region including Tribal Colleges to build and nurture these relationships.
  • Ability to provide classroom presentations, career fair participation, and tribal council and community presentation, are in addition to mailing regarding the Academy to counselors, tribal education advocates, and other science and pre-health advisors, and parents
  • Demonstrated attention to detail
  • Ability to organize and compile and complete mailings, packets, and other materials for meeting participants
  • Ability to learn University policies and procedures related to event planning and catering, as well as to handle issues calmly and courteously
  • Demonstrate time management, organization, and record-keeping, tracking, and filing skills.
  • Ability to deal with and prioritize multiple tasks, both immediate and ongoing
  • Familiarity with standard office equipment (copier, fax), communication tools (email, voicemail, the Internet) and software (particularly Microsoft Office tools including Word, Outlook, Excel, Publisher, Access)
  • Working knowledge of standard office procedures and ability to learn University policies and procedures
  • Experience with routine office tasks including preparing mailings, filing, and processing routine forms and paperwork
  • Must be customer-oriented in representing the department and dealing with students, healthcare providers, faculty, and external constituents


Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of campus and its health career programs.
  • Knowledge of best practices for disadvantaged students to succeed in college.
  • At least two years of experience coordinating programs for disadvantaged students; excellent organization and communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree
