Academic Coordinator of Landscape Architecture
Pratt Institute
Pratt Institute School of Architecture is seeking an Academic Coordinator of Landscape Architecture who will be an integral part of the Graduate Architecture and Urban Design department. This role will support the overall mission, goals, and strategic initiatives of the department by facilitating training and mentoring, hiring, review and renewal of contacts, and the development of full and part-time faculty in conjunction with the Chair of the Graduate Architecture and Urban Design, and Dean of the school. The Coordinator will be expected to be research-active and have an established track record in Landscape Architecture practice and/or research. The successful candidate should be an experienced educator familiar with landscape architecture and design practice.
About the new Masters in Landscape Architecture Program
The Masters in Landscape Architecture will accept its first students in January 2022 with the intention of pursuing accreditation within the first four years. The MLA program will balance theory, design, and practice to support human well-being and environmental uplift, offering a multitude of opportunities to engage communities and professionals. With students from diverse backgrounds and geographic areas, Pratt Institute's collaborative and inclusive community will be one of the program's greatest assets. While drawing upon Pratt's strong ties to its Brooklyn home, the MLA is focused on landscape ecology and challenges posed by climate change, and on the physical, ecological, social, and political continuum represented by rural to urban configurations.
Building on the School of Architecture's interdisciplinary approaches to the built environment, the Landscape Architecture graduate program draws upon the rich history and discourse of design and making in the SoA and GAUD while considering how to cultivate methods and modes of representation, prototyping and testing that are pertinent to current and future graduates in their practice. The curriculum also presents students with unique opportunities to take a holistic approach to environmental, social, and system-level resilience and restorative justice as the overarching goal and target of landscape design.
While students have the option to select electives according to their specific interests, the program synthesizes design thinking and ecological thinking to respond to the challenges of climate change. Design thinking will be tethered to ecological, social, and political outcomes and students of varying interests will be encouraged to utilize an interdisciplinary approach as the starting point for students' collaborative and independent inquiries.
Key Essential Duties include the following:
- Responsible for leading the MLA program, under the leadership of the Chair of the Graduate Architecture and Urban Design Department. The position will include research and service responsibilities in the department, school, and institute, adjusted for administrative responsibilities. While some teaching is expected, there is a maximum of 2 courses per semester which is compensated in addition to the coordinator's position.
- Provide leadership to the department in achieving the highest possible level of excellence in the department's teaching, research/creative work, and service, and is responsible for focusing the energies of the entire faculty of the unit to best align its mission with that of the Institute.
- Articulate the goals of the department, both internally and externally, and lead the program in realizing these goals, while modeling and maintaining a climate that supports creativity, innovation, equity, and inclusion and to implement and uphold the tenets of the Strategic Plan in all areas of teaching and research.
- Assist the GAUD Chairperson with various responsibilities including but not limited to the recruitment, selection, and evaluation of program full and part-time faculty. In addition, the coordinator works with the chair to ensure adequate faculty mentoring programs are in place and that faculty performance reviews are conducted regularly.
- In conjunction with the GAUD Chairperson, the Coordinator is responsible for administering the day-to-day operations, executing fiscal affairs, managing course offerings and providing input on faculty teaching assignments, advising students, overseeing student recruitment, retention, and success, and other duties as assigned.
