Description
Responsibilities:
  • Must be able to perform all the responsibilities of a Public Safety Officer
    • Interview complainants, witnesses, survivors, and suspects relative to investigations and prepare related documentation and reports
    • Investigate citizen complaints of officer misconduct, discourtesy, inappropriate behavior, and prepare written reports for documentation
      • Conduct on-the-job training for new officers and students
      • Review and approve written work and reports of assigned personnel
      • Make routine checks of officer performance while on duty and inspect the condition and completeness of the officers' equipment, appearance and work habits
      • Encourage professional excellence among the staff and promote an organizational culture of quality service and community policing
      • Enforce all departmental rules and regulations pertaining to the performance of duties and conduct of all officers
        • Participate in presentations to various groups regarding safety related topics
        • Attend training seminars and participate on University committees in an effort to build positive internal and external relationships
        • Support the decisions of management and display a professional demeanor at all times in language, appearance and attitude
        • Assist the Lieutenant- Operations in daily scheduling of shift minimums and assume responsibility of scheduling and approving Officer's additional duties in the Lieutenants absence
        • In cooperation with the Operations Lieutenant, coordinate department involvement in special events on campus and in the community
        • Complete performance evaluations on subordinate staff in conjunction with the Lieutenant- Operations
        • Assist the Lieutenant- Operations in creating, implementing, and enforcing rules and regulations
        • Take the necessary action pertaining to disciplinary matters and provide appropriate documentation of the incident
        • Supervise and evaluate the student worker program, campus Safewalk program and campus parking program
        • Manage the parking appeals process
        • Manage, review, and develop strategies to maximize the effectiveness of the Field Training Program
        • Coordinate, review, recommend, and provide community and problem oriented policing strategies and training
        • Perform additional duties as assigned


Qualifications:



Availability, Education and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Police Science, Criminal Justice or Security Management OR an equivalent combination of education and experience required
  • 5 years progressively responsible experience in law enforcement or similar field preferred
  • This position requires availability to work ALL shifts as scheduled- 1st, 2nd, 3rd, day, night,weekend, rotating, and swing



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Must be able to become thoroughly familiar with the policies and rules of the Public Safety Department and University
    • Must have valid Wisconsin motor vehicle license and be insurable under the University's insurance plan.
    • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, diplomacy and tact in dealing with sensitive situations, ability to maintain strict confidentiality; ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently; and a strong commitment to providing top-quality customer service
    • Necessary ability to interact professionally and effectively with a diverse public required
    • Availability to spend time outside shift assignment hours to develop special projects or extra assignments
    • Must be able to walk continually for two miles and climb four stories of stairs
