Affiliated (Part-Time) Faculty English Language Learning (ELL)
Join our community and experience Emerson College!

The Office of International Student Affairs (OISA) at Emerson College is accepting CVs for candidates who could teach one or more English Language Learning (ELL) course(s) in the Department of Communication Studies. The selected Affiliated (Part-Time) Faculty may also administer and manage English Language Learning assessment as well as assign students to ELL support courses based on assessment results.

Classes for the Fall 2021 semester begin August 31, 2021. For the Fall 2021 term Emerson College is planning to return to in-person teaching, and the above courses each meet twice a week for 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Emerson offers ELL courses for students whose native language is not English and who would benefit from academic and professional English language support. These courses are free of charge, non-graded and focused on providing students with the resources to enhance the skills they currently have to further their success at Emerson and in their future careers. They are not remedial/beginner courses, instead designed to advance collegiate-level English language skills.

These courses are designed for graduate students, with undergraduate students having the option to participate in spring semesters. The courses focus on preparing students for academic success, a deeper understanding of American culture, and professional careers beyond Emerson College. Students enrolled in ELL courses will engage in specific academic writing and reading activities to comprehend structure/organization and goals of academic written assignments necessary to achieve in graduate level academic courses.

Below are course descriptions for For CC612-01 and CC612-02. Sections are capped at 12-14 students.

CC612 - 01: Academic Writing for International Students: Exploration of Academic Writing

Fall 2021: Mon/Wed 8:00-9:45 am

Students will build their English grammar skills, have the opportunity to critique their assignments from other classes, improve their writing skills through in-class exercises, and investigate professional communicative writing such as cover letters, resumes, and email.

CC612 - 02: Academic Writing for International Students: ELL Creative Writing Course

Fall 2021: Monday/Thursday 10:00-11:45 am

Students investigate and practice using different forms of creative writing. This course will enhance student's abilities at persuasive writing and using creative techniques within students' individual career fields.

Preferred qualifications include a Master's degree in TESOL/ESL, applied linguistics, or closely­ related field is required and a minimum of 3 to 5 semester years of directly related academic teaching or experience in English as a Second Language program administration. Preferred qualifications also include: Professional experience teaching overseas, and/or working or studying internationally; competency in, or advanced study of, at least one language other than English.

A successful candidate should possess strong interpersonal, public relations and communication skills, with a demonstrated understanding of the prevailing issues related to international education in U.S. higher education in general, and international students in particular.

A successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
