The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) is seeking a transformational leader to serve as Director of the School of Education. The School Director is a full-time, 12-month position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with an administrative appointment beginning July 1, 2022. The successful candidate for this position will join the faculty, staff, students, and the broader academic community in guiding the School of Education to new levels of achievement, visibility, and impact.

USM has a long and rich history in teacher education, having its roots as a Normal College. The School of Education is one of the fastest growing schools in the college and home to six program areas Elementary Education (ELE), Special Education (SPE), Educational Administration (EDA), Secondary Education / Alternate Route (CIS), Higher Education Administration (HEA) and Research, Education, Statistics, and Assessment (RESA), operates across two campuses (Hattiesburg and Gulf Park), and offers programs at the undergraduate, masters, specialist, and doctoral levels.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide leadership for School of Education programs, oversee accredited programs, and ensure that curricula, instruction, assessment, research and outreach are innovative, of the highest quality, and aligned with college and University strategic plans
  2. Oversee School administration, including developing the schedule and staffing courses, managing the budget, overseeing staff, and ensuring efficient/effective day-to-day operations of the School
  3. Provide leadership and effective representation and advocacy for the School at the College and University levels, including implementation of School, College and University policies, procedures, and guidelines
  4. Promote a healthy climate and collaborative internal and external working relationships; engage in effective, regular, and transparent communication with faculty and other stakeholders; foster effective relationships with local, state, and national educational entities (including P-12 schools)
  5. Facilitate faculty development and collaborative engagement in meaningful evaluation of faculty (i.e., annual evaluations and goal setting, promotion and tenure processes)
  6. Teach one undergraduate and/or graduate-level course in the School per year
  7. Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Earned doctorate in one of the disciplines represented in the School of Education or a closely related field
  2. A record of success in higher education as a faculty member having held the rank of associate professor or above and having earned tenure 
  3. Demonstrated experience in an administrative role in P-12 or higher education
