Franciscan University of Steubenville’s (FUS) study abroad program located in Gaming, Austria invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track, open rank, yearly-renewable Fine Arts position, beginning in August of 2022 (with a possibility to start in January 2022). An appropriate Ph.D., MFA, or MA (e.g., in Art History) is required at time of employment. The area of specialization is open but requires the ability to teach two sections of the core class ART 150 “Visual Arts and the Catholic Imagination” each semester. In addition, the suitable candidate must offer ART electives, whether studio-oriented (such as “Drawing” “Painting” “Sacred Art”) or in the history of art. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching, have an active scholarly or artistry (e.g. studio-work) agenda, and must support the mission of the university. The candidate must recognize that the teaching assignment in our study-abroad program is a service-oriented position that includes:

  • Aiding in student extra-curricular activities which promote the student’s moral, intellectual, and spiritual growth
  • Willingness to provide needed guided tours of cities, museums, and spiritual centers during FUS organized excursions and pilgrimages
  • Contributing to advance academic objectives (such as aiding in academic orientation, overseeing library resources, promoting exhibitions, conferences & seminars)
  • Participating in a tightly-knit faith community of scholars, religious, and families from various international backgrounds.

Employment will be through the Austrian educational association that operates Franciscan University’s study abroad program and contingent upon receiving an Austrian work visa.

Employment in the study abroad program does not guarantee teaching at Franciscan University’s main campus in Ohio, USA. To apply, please submit the following electronically addressed to Dr. Javier Carreño via Mrs. Carrie Libetti, Academic Affairs, at clibetti@franciscan.edu: a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, a teaching portfolio containing evidence of undergraduate teaching effectiveness (including a statement of teaching philosophy, teaching evaluations, and if applicable also a portfolio of student work from previously taught studio courses), a personal statement responding to FUS’s Mission, a writing sample, and a portfolio of studio work if applicable. Three letters of reference on your behalf should be sent independently. Review of applications will begin Sept. 1 and continue until the position is filled.

FUS is an academically excellent and passionately Catholic university in the Franciscan tradition. The Austrian Program is home to over 200 Franciscan study-abroad students each semester. We seek candidates who understand and will significantly contribute to the university’s mission and goals. For additional information, please visit: https://franciscan.edu/faculty-openings/
