Located in Greater Boston, MassBay is a comprehensive, open-access community college offering associate degrees and certificate programs on three campuses in Wellesley Hills, Framingham, and Ashland, Massachusetts.
Position Summary:
The Academic Achievement Center facilitates the Achieve in Math (AIM) Program. This is a free 3 week-long workshop that helps students build their math skills. The purpose of the program is to help MassBay students, who are struggling to understand basic math concepts, make a better transition into college math courses. There are several goals that include the following:
  • Increase the number of students who place into college-level math courses;
  • Provide necessary tools to develop constructive learning behaviors;
  • Promote conceptual thinking and critical analysis skills; and
  • Help students leverage resources and connections at MassBay to enhance their academic experience.

After successfully finishing the 3-week program, students are eligible to enroll in a Quantitative Reasoning, Statistics co-requisite courses or Pre-Calculus co-requisite. Students will be assessed throughout the program to determine their level of readiness to enroll in credit-bearing courses.
The AIM peer tutors provide assistance within the program through high quality one-to-one and group tutoring. They provide structured coaching to program participants. The peer tutor will form a working alliance with program participants to increase their active knowledge in math. This is a part-time contracted position, with services delivered during the summer. Preparation and training will occur before the summer program begins.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Meet with students on a one-to-one, small-group, or classroom tutoring format(s) to give learning assistance;
  • Exchange contact information with students to contact them directly with tutoring schedule;
  • Inform AIM Facilitator if student misses two appointments in a row or routinely arrives to their session late without notification;
  • Work with facilitator to refine curriculum; and
  • Attend mandatory tutor-training sessions and meetings as required by the Program Director.

This list is not to be considered all-inclusive. A supervisor may assign other duties as required to meet the needs and foster the mission of the College.

Required Qualifications:
  • Earned at least a grade "B" in the subject(s) they tutor;
  • Overall grade point average of 3.0;
  • Faculty Referral form completed by the instructor or department chairperson; and
  • Good communication skills - able to get along with a wide range of personalities and academic skill levels.

Additional Information:
Salary Range: $15.00 per hour
Classification Type: Temporary Employee

This is a grant funded position, and position is contingent on funding.
Final candidates are required to provide sealed transcripts and/or certifications.
Hiring is contingent upon a successful CORI clearance.
