Job Description:

The Academic Counselor performs academic counseling and works with students to develop academic plans of study, work with students to select courses and advises them on their transitions, adding courses, withdrawing courses and assist them with the program requirements; performs administrative tasks associated with department activities such as collecting and organizing data and maintaining an updated student files; student documentation, reports, forms, and general correspondence; receives and refers to the college catalogs, schedules, student records, student handbooks, policies, procedures, and reference material.

Supervision Received: Reports to the Associate Vice President of Student Life

Essential Functions:

Serves as academic counselor and works with students to develop academic plans of study;

  • Conducts career advising, career assessments, and transfer advising; screens, interviews, evaluates, and processes incoming students for general studies competency;
  • Registers into appropriate academic curricula; evaluates admission applications, registration documents, transcripts, placement test scores, and transfer credits;
  • Advises students regarding their academic plan, course selection/sequencing;
  • Provides information regarding course degree requirements and transfer requirements;
  • Monitors academic progress of students; assists students in registering, adding, or withdrawing from courses;
  • Serves as academic counselor and works with students to develop academic plans of study;

  • Participates in new student orientations; coordinates activities with other programs and specially-funded programs);
  • Coordinates participation in grant-funded programs for career education, job training, and job placement;
  • Performs administrative tasks associated with department activities;
  • Attends meetings/events, serves on committees, and makes presentations;
  • Conducts academic informational sessions or workshops; refers students to other services as appropriate; communicates with other departments, faculty members, students, school officials;
  • Maintains professional knowledge in applicable areas.



Requirements:

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • All candidates must have legal authorization to work in the United States
  • Master's required in Education, Counseling, Psychology or closely related field; with three (3) years' experience and/or training involving college admissions, academic advisement, career development, or program/project management; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.


PREFERRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrated experience with college advising systems and providing direct counseling/advising services to students.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with various constituencies including faculty, staff & administration.
  • Familiarity with college committee structures and management
  • Must demonstrate excellent communications skills in a multi-cultural environment
  • Excellent organizational and verbal and written communication skills
  • Must demonstrate excellent abilities in the use of technological tools, such as Microsoft office, PowerPoint & Excel.
  • Experience with Jenzebar.
  • Availability to work some evenings and weekend required
