We are searching for an experienced Lab Instructor Veterinary Technology .

Job Purpose:
Provide instruction on veterinary technology related lab activities while also performing veterinary technology lab set up, cleaning, ordering, and end of the semester closing duties and manage student workers and part-time employees. Oversee and coordinate the use of technology in support of veterinary technology classes, labs, and clinical. Support lab functions, including training faculty and students on equipment use, equipment setup, and lab operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure faculty and students are able to perform experiments and/or assignments properly and safely by setting-up lab supplies and equipment according to established instructions and procedures.
  • Assist in instruction of laboratory activities.
  • Maintain adequate stock of supplies, keep an inventory of current stock, order items as requested, receive stock and supplies and properly store all items. Maintain record of supplies used each semester to aid in determining current/future needs.
  • Organize and maintain vet tech labs, maintain an equipment inventory (location, serial numbers, etc.), put stock and equipment away after use; clean spills, examine safety equipment and first aid supplies to ensure proper working order. Ensure weekly cleaning is performed.
  • Assist in implementation of proper safety procedures and standards, identify and report potential safety hazards. Dispose of solutions and materials according to established guidelines.
  • Maintain equipment in veterinary technology classrooms and laboratories. Report equipment problems and prepare appropriate requisitions for equipment repair. Make minor equipment repairs when possible (and reasonable). Follow-up on completed repairs to assure equipment is operating satisfactorily.
  • Follow rules and standards concerning electrical and chemical hazards to ensure the safety of one's self and the students. Perform weekly cleaning duties. Serve as a liaison between associate faculty and full-time faculty as needed.
  • Assist veterinary technology faculty with the utilization of technology in support of classes, labs, and clinical.
  • Train faculty and students on current and new technology equipment, discipline specific computers, and supporting software.
  • Supervise student assistants.
  • Communicate and enforce clinical and lab equipment usage procedures for students and faculty.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

Associate of Applied Science degree in Veterinary Technology from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited institution. Two (2) years of clinical experience required.

One (1) year experience equivalent in technician education through involvement in a practice affiliated with an accredited program, formal teaching, and/or training of new graduates/hires preferred.

Licenses and Certifications:
Must be a current Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) within the State of Texas OR eligible for licensing in the state of Texas.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of federal and state animal health laws, including OSHA, USDA, DEA regulations
  • Knowledge of Accreditation Policies and Procedures of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA)
  • Knowledge of teaching or training techniques
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow and uphold applicable laws and the veterinary technology profession’s ethical codes to provide high quality care to patients

  • Proficiency in veterinary technician duties and skills with IV catheters, blood draws, laboratory procedures, monitoring anesthesia, medication administration and triage for domestic species both large and small
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other faculty, staff, students, and others as required
  • Ability to teach, demonstrate for, and mentor students in the following veterinary technical skills in both large and small animal aspect of the Veterinary Technology Program
  • Participate in facility management utilizing traditional and electronic media and appropriate veterinary medical terminology
  • Method for effectively and safely administering prescribed drugs to patients
  • Methods for proper packaging, handling, and storage of specimens for laboratory analysis
  • Methods for proper analysis of laboratory specimens
  • Proper protocols for accurately dispensing and explaining prescribed drugs to clients
  • Ability to demonstrate and perform patient assessment techniques in a variety of animal species
  • Ability to understand and demonstrate husbandry, nutrition, therapeutic and dentistry techniques appropriate to various animal species
  • Ability to safely and effectively manage patients in all phases of anesthetic procedures
  • Ability to safely and effectively select, utilize and maintain anesthetic delivery and monitoring instruments and equipment
  • Ability to understand and integrate all aspects of patient management for common surgical procedures in a variety of animal species
  • Ability to understand and provide the appropriate instruments, supplies and environment to maintain asepsis during surgical procedures
  • Ability to safely and effectively produce diagnostic radiographs and non-radiographic images
  • Ability to safely and effectively handle common laboratory animals used in animal research
  • Ability to understand the approach to providing safe and effective care for birds, reptiles, amphibians, guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters, and ferrets


Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Heavy Work - Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects. Positions in this class typically include talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, walking and repetitive motions, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching, climbing and balancing, plus pushing, pulling and lifting. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and intense noises. In addition, incumbents may be subjected to gases and workspace restrictions. Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Occasional outside work. Frequent physical effort required.
