The VCUL Collections Care Technician assists the Collections Care Librarian/Conservator in a variety of tasks to ensure that VCUL collection materials are accessible and in usable condition.

The successful candidate will:
  1. Repair and care for materials from VCU Library’s circulating collections: mending paper, rebinding books, re-sewing, spine repairs, making enclosures to house materials, and assisting with other collections care tasks in a variety of formats.
  2. Assist when we have a leak or other emergency that requires a response to protect collections.
  3. Process items sent to the bindery, creating lists in their software and packaging shipments.
  4. Edit tutorial videos.
  5. Check items in and out of “repair” in Alma.
  6. Assist in shelving items in need of repair.
  7. Maintain spreadsheets with condition details.
  8. Help with regular workspace maintenance and upkeep.
  9. Assist with additional projects as needed.



Preferred:
  1. Knowledge of book structure, previous experience working in a library.
  2. Experience in repairing books, crafts, sewing, or the arts.
  3. Experience using databases, e.g. Alma.
  4. Experience using Adobe Premiere or other film editing software.


Up to 29 hours per week at the rate of $11.00 – $12.75 per hour, depending on experience.

Required Qualifications
  1. Demonstrated manual dexterity and coordination.
  2. Ability to discern differences in weight, texture, and quality of materials.
  3. Ability to master precise measuring and cutting.
  4. Ability to work independently and maintain a record of work.
  5. Demonstrated problem solving capability and organizational skills.
  6. Ability to collaborate and share space in a workshop environment.
  7. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
