Compensation and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $2,908 - $3,300 per month

Full Classification Salary Range: $2,908 - $5,261 per month

  • This is a full-time (equivalent to 40 hours per week), probationary, non-exempt position.
  • This position is on a 10/12 Pay Plan which is equivalent to ten months of salary distributed over a 12-month period. The scheduled months off will be June and July.


The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 14 paid holidays a year. Job Summary

Under the supervision of the faculty costume designer and costume shop supervisor, the Costume Shop Technician is responsible for the shared leadership, coordination and planning of the day-to-day operations of the costume shop, including its machines, work spaces and costume stock. The costume shop assistant is also responsible for serving as assistant costume designer and/or supervising assistant designers; establishing and meeting construction and fitting deadlines; attending rehearsals and working with designers to meet artistic goals; and may assist in other costume production areas as directed by the needs of the shop and the productions. The assistant supervises and instructs students as the supervisory designee for and in collaboration with the Costume Shop Supervisor.

The technician is also responsible for the creation of costumes; interpretation of original design work and pattern drafting based on costume designs, including all facets of the construction process such as alterations, fittings and maintenance of pulled, purchased or rented clothing items. In addition, the technician will oversee student wardrobe crews and serve as hair and make-up lead.

Key Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of historical periods as it relates to design of costumes along with the construction and materials needed for making theatre and dance costumes
  • Demonstrated experience drafting/draping patterns
  • Demonstrated experience constructing costumes; tailoring experience a plus
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use industrial sewing machines
  • Thorough understanding of the costume design and construction collaboration processes

Education and Experience

  • Two years of related experience working in professional repertory or stock theatre company or academic costume shop and/or equivalent completion of professional training or college coursework
